Garden Window Rough Opening Advice

I wasn't sure the best spot to post this so let me know if there's a better location.

I'm remodeling my kitchen and want to get replace my old garden Window with a new white one. I was able to find one company that would do it for $2550 after their generous 25% discount. This got me thinking that I should do it myself and these windows can't cost that much. A quick trip to Home Depot for quotes and I found the window they were going to buy for $923 and a Jeld Wen for $678. Those prices confirmed I'm going to buy some scaffolding, diy this job and still come out ahead. That brings me to my question.

They quoted a window for a 48" RO width and I have a 46" RO width. Since garden windows have the nail flange flush with the mounting face can I mount a 48" window and reduce the ugly reveal on either side?

Here's a photo of the current window. I also have two studs on either side of the window so the nail flange on a 48" window should hit a stud.

Maybe I'm not reading this right, but how are you going to squeeze a window that requires a 48" rough opening into in 46" rough opening?

Garden windows mount different than normal windows. They fit up to the rough opening but don't sit inside the framing like a normal window.

Maybe do what I did....make your own.

My original kitchen window was a little 36x36. Screw that......

I roughed it out as large as I could make it. Made a wood frame to fit the opening. Ordered new windows to fit in the frame.

We have a large bay window not far from it so we wanted to kinda replicate the look of it.\

Windows are Milgard...fiberglass on the outside, vinyl inside. Double paned and low E. The side windows are casement....which means we can crank them open.

Wife LOVES it. In the summer she has it full of plants. For Xmas if was full of Xmas ****...

That looks amazing and was probably way cheaper than a garden window. I especially like that you finished it to the eave.

Part of my problem is that I can't find garden windows on the shelf anywhere to pull measurements from. Looking at the Jeld Wen install instructions it appears there's a lip on the bottom that rests on the framing but even with a 46" RO I think this will fit.

Cheaper? All 3 together were about $1000

I don't know where you are, but some of the window manuf's also custom build garden windows.

Why don't you call Jenn Weld and ask them ? If anyone should know the product they should ?????
