Gas Auger? Or impact wrench auger

I’m going to be doing a lot of landscape planting putting in plants, small trees and bulbs. I’m looking at HF’s gas powered auger. Videos of it in action don’t look bad. But I’m seeing a lot of smaller augers working with cordless drill. I’m thinking of adapting a decent sized auger with 1/2” socket and driving it from my cordless impact wrench. HF’s gas auger says it’s 2hp, with 45 ft lbs of torque. I know I can get more torque out of impact. But it doesn’t have the handles.

Only thing I like about impact is it’s electric, so no pull string to start, and I don’t need to store this thing for 8 months between use.

I have that 8" gas auger and it will twist you up if you arent paying attention. Where i live our soil has a high clay content so digging with a shovel is near impossible. I've put a couple hundred holes in the ground with it... for me it was worth the 180.00 i paid

Yea, I’m in Central Texas with clay soil. Good to know, thanks.

Never seen an impact driver connected to a dirt auger. I can say the battery powered ice augers are not yet up to the chore.

I have the bulb auger that goes in your drill. It works great for bulbs. It’s like 1.5 or 2” in diameter. I’m not sure if they make a bigger auger, but I imagine they do. Guys over in the Milwaukee forums talk about what great feat their 18v fuel will perform next, so I imagine it’ll work on dirt, lol

You can get more impact torque from a cordless impact wrench but you can't get more power. I would skip both and rent a flex shaft or hydraulic earth auger with between a 5hp and 13hp gas engine, you'll be on you way to doing "a lot of landscape planting" much sooner for the plants and trees. A strong corded drill is your best bet for turning a bulb auger.

THIS^^

Just plan/mark out the full landscape project carefully and spend the $150 to rent a hydraulic auger for a day. It makes life insanely easy.

If you are doing tons of work rent a bobcat/dingo and drill, move and plant them the easy way. Auger, bucket or forks to pick them up.

I'd love to find an earth auger for my Spline drive Roto Hammer. That would be a digging machine. Its great with a shovel attachment.

I bought a 1.5" earth auger on Amazon. It works fine in our soft soil with my cordless drill. Just put the side handle on your drill so you don't sprain your thumb if it hits a rock and stops suddenly. Ask me how I know.

They make electric earth augers. They only make about a 6"-8" hole but they do work well in hard, compacted soil.

Google splined earth auger bit... pick your size

Getting lots of garbage results, even with

"spline" "earth" auger bit or

"spline" "earth auger" bit

I get earth augers in the same category as spline PTO drives, amazon with nothing spline in their category.

If you can find something in 2-3" hole, I'd love to see the links.

Ouch, over $100 for drill, plus $100 for a spline adapter to 5/8"
