With a little bit of searching, you can find replacement filler necks that screw on and are not much more than a straight spout.

The VP cans you can get an add on spout for. The 5 gallon is rather unruly however, the 2.5 gallon is much more manageable.

I like the no spill cans, they work very well but arent super cheap http://www.nospill.com/

There is always buying a stupid can at the store and buying a gas or water spout from the store or online or be like me, find old ones at garage sales and if needed buy a new spout.

LOL - note that the fuel jugs are not DOT rated. We all use them, but...

Buy a water jug kit at Tractor Supply.
Comes with a flexible spout and a vent

This is what I use for misc 5 gallon small engine fuel containers. Throw the vent away and use a short tire valve with the core removed for a vent. The bitty yellow vent pieces don't last long. They either break off or will pop free on their own. Tire valve a little more work on the jug but way easier in the long run.

I had some of those VP style jugs. I was using them to shuttle water during a camping trip but lost them all when the canoe tipped over.

Use VP Fuel jugs. Nothing compares, I have 5 or 6 and there is nothing better. I bought them years ago at the Summer Nationals in NJ. Yes they are not DOT rated but used everyday with no problems. Just a fantastic product.

I have four of the PITA 5-gallon jugs that I modified this weekend by adding a vent and removing all the safety **** from the spout.

I bought these vents, which are installed by drilling a 31/64" hole and popping them into place. I then took apart the spout, removed the spring, o-ring and other stuff that impeded the flow. They work like they are supposed to now.

VP fuel cans.

4 pack for $100 on eBay. Made a hose for like $5 from HD. VP sells 3/4, I made mine 1/2 to fit in the car plus those 3/4 MOVE FUEL!

Also storage with sealed cap they come with. Bought an extra cap and added the hose to that and use when I need, but store with non tube cap.

True Jerry cans. they make small ones as well and a free flow spout. Expensive, but well worth the money. I have 2 20l and 1 10l. My son and I race motocross and these have been thrown in and out of a trailer damn near every weekend for years.

The VP cans are fantastic. I've a couple different colors so that I can track different mixes of fuels (white is lead added, yellow has oil premixed for 2 strokes, red is pump gas and purple will be clear gas, once that can arrives).

X2. Or get a 5 gallon red "utility jug" from any racing parts supplier and be done with it. I have two left over from racing that I've been using for 15 years.

Another vote for the No Spill brand plastic jugs. The spout freakin rocks. I have a small one for my chainsaw and Weedeater and never spill anything. For my 5 gallon cans, I strongly prefer my metal Eagle brand cans. The funnel is great, and I don’t have to deal with the stupid irritating plastic latch piece that everyone hates. I can usually find the Eagles for a decent price online, but Lowe’s also carries them in store.

If you have a Sunoco station near you that sells racing fuels, their NASCAR style plastic cans have a vent and you can purchase a long spout for it separately. Here is a website that lists ethanol free gas by state and includes the Sunoco stations near you. I purchased mine at Airport Sunoco in Allentown Pa. Because I only have 3 posts this site won't allow the full URL. (need 5 posts) The name of the website is pure-gas.org. This is a great site that shows all the stations that sell ethanol free gas.

I use the No-Spill cans. Fairly user friendly. Only gripe is no vent - I need to put some in, just haven't gotten around to it. They fuel slower as they glugg-glugg. Other than that, trigger is convenient and controls the flow of fuel nicely.

Personally I like the blue water cans from Menards paired up with the EZ pour spout kit located in the same isle. The water cans are nice cause they come in 6 gallon instead of 5 that the actual red gas cans are.
Best part being that even though the can says "water" on the side is still has all the flame logos and flammable warnings all over the jug from the previous mold. lol

I only mention the DOT thing because if you have some in the back of the truck and are hauling around a car, or maybe just a mower and get stopped for whatever reason, the detaining officer can make a stink if they so choose. There have been reports of racers written up for carrying fuel in non-DOT containers, sited specifically for the fuel in race car's fuel cell. And the regs say you can't carry more than 1000 lbs without placards and a CDL. That's 147 gallons of fuel. "That's a lot" - not if the DPS guy has a rash and start counting everything including the fuel in the dual tanks of the truck, etc.

The DPS here regularly stops diesel trucks and will stick the tanks looking for "red diesel" so don't think revenue motivated departments won't do other things.

They don't need to be DOT rated unless you are transporting them in a commercial vehicle. For us mortals there is no such thing as an "illegal" gas can as long as it's under 8 gallons, it is not specifically labeled "not for flammable liquids" and it's labeled "gasoline".

From VP site:
NOTE: This is not a portable fuel container as described by ASTM, EPA, ARB and other official agencies. For Racing Fuel only, such as Nitromethane or Methanol, used in sanctioned motorsports. Not for fuel used on highways. Also for storage and transport of feed, water, attractants, fluids and other outdoor products.

And I carry at least 20 gallons of methanol and 15 gallons of pump fuel every trip to the track. Probably 99% of DPS are not worried about it, but the one will cite you and you have to go to court and prove you are not commercial.

Any idea about those of us that do have a CDL, but are only carrying gas cans for our personal use? I have no sponsors on my truck or trailer, but some contingency stickers on my car. I can get rid of those since I am too slow to ever collect on the damn contingency money anyway.

To me it depends on what your fueling. If you want to slam 5 gallons quickly in your car at the track, the VP cans are the way to go.

For all my small engine equipment with small gas tanks, I love the No Spill cans.
