Gas cans

Any idea about those of us that do have a CDL, but are only carrying gas cans for our personal use? I have no sponsors on my truck or trailer, but some contingency stickers on my car. I can get rid of those since I am too slow to ever collect on the damn contingency money anyway.

All I can tell you from Texas is that it varies by state and NOBODY know the rules. One DPS officer will have a completely different idea than the next one. And one of our racers was a senior DPS officer and he backed that statement up saying training was uneven and lots of things are left up to the officer on scene. If the officer thinks you are commercial here, they will make you park the rig and go find a CDL holder to come move it. It's rare, but it happens. Most of the hassles here are for the guys with the big rigs and stacker trailers and "NOT FOR HIRE" on the cab. They seem to be a favorite target. Little guys with boxes like us seem to skate right along. Once across a state line, could be way different.

The best thing us little guys can do is hide behind the "horse exemption". You can go to races and win prize money and not be "commercial" as long as you include winnings in personal income (no Schedule C). Same here, made $40 so far this year LOL. That said, I've had years where race tracks paid me like they were an ATM.

I can say that most of the real issues seem to have happened up in the middle, like Ohio/Indiana/Illinois etc. Hobby racers being told they are commercial because of a sticker on the car and such.

Be carefull of the knock off VP cans. I originally bought speedway racing cans. The top cap cracked on one within a year. The other is now just diesel storage.

Rural King has the VP style cans for $20 each. Same deal, not DOT, but fuels are on the listed uses. These also come with the hose spout. Yellow, red, white.

Much easier to use.

About what I figured. I haven't heard of anyone here in the Southeast having problems, but you never can be too careful.
