Gas Fireplace appearance

I have a natural gas fireplace that I really enjoy. This one has a pilot light burning all the time. Tonight I removed the gas front to clean it as it looks kinda dusty on the inside. This got me to wondering if I could replace my fake logs with something else. Maybe stones like you see sometimes. I just wasn't sure what is ok to use and if I can partially cover the element the flames come out so the flames appear to come out of the stones or if this is all just a bad idea.

Yes, you can buy replacement logs designed for gas fireplaces. I don't believe though that the stone setup would be appropriate for use with an existing pilot light/burner... at the very least you'd have to replace that.

You should be able to get a bag of "Stones" and even the vermiculite (sp) that looks like glowing embers

I one time built a fire down at the river and when the fire got hot, the rocks literally started popping chunks off. I guess there must of been air holes that we heated up?

You have to use the correct type stones. Locals pick stones for their sauna stoves along the lake shore here...no exploding type

Entrapped moisture in the stones. It flashes off to steam and the rapid increase in volume causes the popping.
Some types of concrete are not tolerant of fore, either. When I was a kid we built a fort in an abandoned building in the woods and used a piece of 12" concrete drainage pipe for a chimney on our make shift fireplace. It kept popping, too. We quit using it when one of the kids got hit with a hot chunk of concrete on the forehead.

Your fireplace is designed around a set of burner tubes. They are designed to light without any delayed ignition. Explosion is such a dirty word in this business, changing your log setup could lead to a rapid expansion.

Great timing Ironhorse, Hope you don't mind if I ask a question of you, I just replaced the gas valve on my fireplace, it is a SIT valve replacement for a Honeywell that was discontinued. The pilot on the new valve lights with out depressing it and when I do depress it the fire starts with out turning to the ON position, what is going on here, it seems the valve is wide open and does not require a signal from the Thermocouple, or Thermopile for some reason.....I'm stumped

I am assuming an 820 Nova SIT valve. Gas starts flowing when you turn the knob from off to pilot? If so that is a bad valve. You should turn it to pilot, then depress the knob, hold down until the thermocouple get hot, then release. If you blow out the pilot within a couple of second it should shut off the gas.

Turning from pilot to on and the main burners coming on shows TPTH and TH are connected.

Thx, that pretty mush confirms it for me....valve is bad. Damn valve is hard to get to and only about 4" off of the ground underneath the stove, oh well a few more situps and push ups won't do me any harm.
