My mother inlaw has one and said i can have to use or sale. I have never used one and was thinking i might. The tank feels heavy could have some propane in it? What do you guys like to use?

I prefer wood but propane has a place for an impromptu or quick grill job. Propane was my primary grill when we were stationed overseas and I wasn't able to use wood. It'll serve you well and you can supplement the wood.

Just ask Hank Hill he sells "propane and propane accessories." 
Myself, I like the convenience of propane. Some of the charcoal I've bought in the past always left a fuel taste to the food and that was the Kingsford without using hardly any charcoal lighter.

You should be able to tell how much propane is in the tank by touching down the side of the tank from top to bottom. When the temp gets colder, that's the level of propane. I have a Weber Spirit E310 and love the ease of use. One of my friends put in an outdoor kitchen, which she uses year-round. She had hers hooked up to natural gas and loves having the convenience of NG and not having to swap out the propane tank.
I got the Weber last summer when I was hosting a party for 50. It worked out sooo much better than charcoal and served that amount of food for the group just fine.

A 20 lb tank usually weight 18lbs if I remember right, you can weight and see what it weights.

they're not bad, burners tend to rust out on them. Store it in your garage or shed after you're done. They rust out quick if left in the rain or on dirt.
Stuff cooked over a charcoal grill used to taste great but I don't have the patience or time to fire up a grill and wait till it's ready. I want to eat now.

Between 17 and 18 lbs for an empty tank is right on, which means that
a full 20# tank will weigh in just under 38 lbs.
