Gas Heater help

I was given a shop heater similar to the one shown below. The guy who gave it to me said he thought it worked. I plug the heater in but the fan doesn't blow. I don't have any of the gas connections hooked up yet. I wanted to bench test it before I went to the trouble of hanging it and hooking it up to gas.

Question - should the fan work by just plugging it in to a power source or is the fan triggered by some sort of thermostat and does the gas connection need to be hooked up before the fan will operate.

I appreciate any help.

I don't know that model or how old it is, but most heaters don't turn on the fan until after they are lit.

I am not positive because I am not a heating expert, but I think you need to have a thermostat hooked up to it and turn the thermostat dial so that it calls for heat. Until you do that, it won't do anything.

The fans are usually controlled by a heater, either through the thermostat calling for heat or by the heat exchanger being warmed by the burners. If you want to see if the fan works you could wire it direct to see if it comes on.
