I am sheetrocking my garage this weekend, and will be installing 50k mr heater and insulation in a couple weeks. I want to get the gas line ran for the heater prior to installing the sheetrock. Here is my question, do I really need to cut the extra 1/2" CSST? I have about 55 ft to run and really don't want to use the old school metal pipe. 75ft is what I am planning to go with, but curious if I really need to cut the extra length.

I put pipe in the wall from the basement with a stub sticking out. I have yellow flex going to the pipe in the basement and from the stub sticking out of the garage wall to the heater (after a shutoff valve). So about 8’ of pipe and 25’ of flex.

Every time I see that stuff on a jobsite it's never done right. Nobody ever has the outside jacket under the fitting. They always have the yellow jacket a inch back. The jacket is there to contain a gas leak.
Also I would even use that pipe, it's too easy to poke a hole in. I found a roofing nail thru that stuff in a guys attic. It was looped up against the roof deck and when the house got a new roof they shot a nail right in it. It was like that for 2 years. He didn't have a sense of smell, he was lucky nothing ever happened. The company that put his fireplace in was too lazy to run black iron thru his attic.
Beware.

x2 on not using that ****. My gas supplier will not use it anymore. Alot of times its bonded to the panel box and sometimes it is not. Seems to be back and forth info on what to do with it. My moms place almost caught on fire from a lightning strike with CSST

Cutting it is easy, just use a normal tube cutter, then remove the outer cover, in the brand I've use, cut the jacket at the fourth 'ridge' and peel off. Takes all of a minute. It needs to be supported well, I think every 4 ft for the 1/2". Leaving the extra just makes for installing more hangers/supports. More work than cutting.

The jacket is only for protection, all the sealing is in the fitting, but removing too much just looks ugly.

I used black gas pipe everywhere when I did my heater install

No China and Mexico made pipe either from the big box stores

My local True Value carries American made Anvil brand black gas pipe and fittings

I would never use CSST

Run Black Iron on hangers along with your Air piping. Paint it to keep with the Industrial look. I came through the wall and went straight up with Hangers.
