Anyone know what Chicago requires (or allows) for running a gas line from the house to detached garage?? I'm trying to figure out things like depth of trench, permissible materials, etc....

If Chicago doesn't allow this, can any of the experts in here advise me on the best way to achieve a natural gas connection in the garage??

The service would be appx. 30' from the house--75' from the meter. Garage has a few 4" PVC stubs in the foundation. Any help is appreciated; thanks fellas!

Cook County really makes you jump through hoops.
I live in Kane County, so I tapped into a line, (that once was a Gas furnace for a 3 seasons porch), and continued it in black iron pipe inside my house.
once i went through the foundation, I added a 90, a valve and went underground, under a sidewalk, and to my garage...using flexable Stainless steel tubing with a plastic jacket.
The tubing goes through flexable plastic tubing (the same stuff the utility companies use). My garage is 50' from my house.
Once it came up by my garage, added another valve and 90ed in and continued with black iron pipe again.
Works Great.

Call peoples gas and ask them what they would like. I don't think they like pipe, but not sure they like feeds to garages either. Been a while since I ran one. They may want it done in their burial type plastic tube with an insulated stub. Be patient. They can be trying at times.

thx guys. I called an old plumber in Niles to come give me a quote....

...For $650, he'll run my natural gas (black pipe, which is what Chicago wants, wrapped with tar....with T's and shut-offs by the house and inside the garage), water (with a sillcock and shut-off at the house and another inside the garage), and a drain (for a sink, not floor, tied into my basement sump).

I usually do these kinds of things myself around the house and fire station, but his price seems worth it to me. You guys wanna weigh in??

That's a killer price compared to what I recently got quoted to have the gas line run from house to garage. What is your total length required for piping? With me my total distance was 98ft whch may contribute to the higher quote of $1534.00.. I,m still entertaining more quotes to compare prices locally.

Yeah but I think they are beyond that system now though. Last time I did a feed to a shop it was in the high density yellow gas tubing that they like for the mains and it had to have an electrical isolation device on it for lightning strikes.
In Chicago the Utility pretty much determines the material type and installation type.
Pretty sure that Niles is not using peoples but Nicor or North Shore gas. Chicago is Peoples. Each of these utilities have a preference as to material types, they all run slightly different systems.
In my opinion there really would be nothing wrong with the black pipe and tar paper, but in order to give the OP the best answer as per it being legal, my best advice is to consult the utility provider.
It would be worth a phone call.
The guy gave you a real fair price too.
