Found the answer with research of Modish Building . . . . . it's in Portland, OR and this unusual parking was called Pigeon Hole parking.

See info at:
http://vintageportland.wordpress.com/tag/modish-building/

Write-up says these "parking systems" were plagued with bad electronics and would leave the cars stranded untils repairs were made. Now that site is just surface parking.

Bomber Gas is gone now. Last I heard they took the plane down and are restoring it-I think the station is still there though.

When i saw the pic, I thought ..'Portland used to have something like that.' Guess I was right..

Was too young to recall much but I do have a memory of going to downtown with my partnes and watch the cars go up and down on the lifts..

That's 72 cars neatly stacked in a small area. If somebody could modernize that fora big city, you could make yourself a small fortune.

actually they have.... sort of. When I was in Germany I saw a few parking places that went up and down. It was nothing to that extent and only went two or three high, and maybe 3 or 4 wide. I think I remember seeing it mainly outside residential places but I could be wrong.

The restored Phillips 66 station at the Bartlesville, OK airport. Very cool with a perfect period interior.

Bartlesville was the birthplace of Phillips as a company. Frank Phillips pioneered aviation fuel, CNG, plastics and thousands of other products.
