New post frame construction building is 28'x48'x12. Walls at R19 and ceiling at R30. Interior walls and ceiling finished in steel. Indiana location. I'm thinking that a 100 BTU natural gas unit heater will do. How far down from the 12' ceiling should I hang the unit?

Flue pipe exiting thru the ceiling, or thru the walls? Some heaters have vent out the top and some out the back, to some extent, this will determine how close to the ceiling you can put the heater.
You need it high enough to be able to blow the heat out over the area, even with vehicles, cabinets, lifts, whatever, in the way. On the other hand, heat rises, if you mount it high, it has to blow quite downward as heat begins to rise the moment it exits the unit.
I'd seriously consider some ceiling fans to push that heat back down to the floor.

The lower the better, to a point.
Also, I think 100,000BTU is probably a little too much for you. 55,000 would probably be plenty and 75,000 would be more than enough.

We have a 30x30x13 garage with r19 walls and r30 ceilings. We are going to hang our heater at around 10 foot to the top of the heater and about 18" from the wall.
Already getting some good feedback. Thank you and keep the replies coming. As you can tell, I'm not too experienced.
Additional info: I do plan to vent out the side wall.

Can you really just use an eye lag bolt into the 2x4 truss rail and hang with link chain? I think that I read that approach on a heater supplier website. That would be best for me since the ceiling is steel covered and already blown with insulation.

Lots of people use redi-rod and brackets to hang the heater with. Makes fine adjustment of height and angles a little easier.
