GJ,

Building my new garage I have decided to add a lean to for some covered storage off of one of the sides. I have some extra metal roofing left over and would like to use it up. I have enough to run a 21' long leanto.

The problem I am running into is if it is run that long I am running out of room to my water heater vent. I can't really find much information on venting near a leanto or carport. Looking for any clearance help I can get on how to vent this and maximize the length of the leanto/carport.

I can run the vent up to 1' under the nonoperable window. but I have about 2' clearance to the leanto if I am running it 21'

I see where you're coming from. Looking at the Bradford White instructions for powervent water heaters, the VERTICAL CLEARANCE for any vent within 2-feet horizontal distance of a soffit is listed as:

"*b) “Clearance in accordance with local installation codes and the requirements of the gas supplier”.

That would seem to say that if it was MORE THAN 2-feet (horizontally) from the soffit is not even a concern? If all else fails, call your local code enforcement person or even check with the manufacturer.

Yeah it's weird. It is two feet from an inside corner. So I may just go with that.

I don't really have any local code people in my town. But can ask around.

Call VT Gas. They were excellent customers of mine when I was back there and they can assist you. If it is a permitted job, you may as well be at Inspection services as if they do not like your solution, you will have to change it anyway. Your local BW Distributor is FW Webb. Excellent folks there as well.

Where is the natural gas HWH now ?? How is it vented ??

Does the HWH need to stay where it's at ?? Could you just close in the left end of lean to for "Build Out" that would hold the HWH and maybe even an air compressor ?? This would allow you to vent straight up through the build-out roof.

Worst case scenario, change HWH to electric.

It's a new build and new gas install. Nothing is in place right now except conduit to that location for a gas line.

Wasnt planning to add on or bumpout besides the leanto. Already have a spot for the compressor.

I can always punch it through the roof if I had too but want to keep it sidewall vented.
