Hey guys, I am drawing a blank on how to organize some gaskets. I bought a complete engine gasket set just to avoid going to the parts house in the event something starts to leak but am having trouble coming up with a storage solution so they wont get ruined. I do alot of grinding and metal work in my garage so lots of metal dust. Any solutions? Pics are appreciated

In the shop, we used to use a piece of wire looped..even an old wire hanger. Maybe throw a plastic bag over the works, poking a small hole in the top for the hanger hook to poke out similar to a garment bag from a dry cleaners. string the gaskets on the hanger and twist it a little to hook it shut. so long as they aren't jammed on there or pulled on, they should be ok like that. then the loaded hanger can be hooked on the wall out of the way?

Sounds like the kind of thing I stash in a closet in the house. My garage is small, so I sneak somethings into odd ball spots in the house.

Put them between two sheets of stiff cardboard or even thin wood.

I agree, to keep them nice and flat, store them between two sheets of hardboard (I think you might call that Masonite over there) and stick the whole thing inside a plastic bag to keep it clean. If they'll fit stick it in a filing cabinet otherwise flat on shelf or in a cupboard.

I have a drawer in one of my tool boxes that is nothing but gaskets. Keeps them clean and bend free.

I have never seen a gasket set that did not come in a box or package of some type ? Just leave it in its original container. If not, wrap them in a plastic garbage bag and hang them on the wall ???

This is what I do. In fact when I was doing a lot of automotive work I had a cheap toolbox just for gaskets.

What kind of car is this?....seems a bit silly to go out and get a complete gasket just just in case something eventually leaks!

All the ideas above sound like they should work. Depending on the type of gasket you could always throw them in a big ziplock and keep them in the vehicle somewhere if possible.

Some, if they're light enough, will hang off a screw or dowel by one of the bolt or indicator pin holes. Otherwise they get laid flat (I have a shelf just for gaskets). I have some antique head gaskets that I set up a gig to hang them on, supporting their weight over a few holes, that are good as new - after 20 years.

Ones that have been warped (what I do, sometimes that's the best you can find), I fabbed a "press" (one side milled and sanded wood, the other an old marble countertop chunk) to re-flatten them, and a similar gig (more countertop marble and sheets of those thin cigar box cedar liner sheets) to store them to prevent them from re-warping until used. I've saved one-off gaskets with folds and wrinkles that should have been the end of them this way...

This. Leave them in the box. Tape it shut.

Its for an old Mazda pickup and the parts stores around here never have the gasket when I need it. The whole set came on a cardboard backer with saran wrap around it. I am liking the tool box ideas though. Thanks for the help. Any other ideas out there?

Long packaged gaskets - on a nail, on the wall. Lots of nails on the wall. Small carb, etc - boxes on the shelf. Don't open the package until ready for use, ESPECIALLY head gaskets, double that for Felpro Blues.

I have 2 large sets of " construction print " file cabinets, that I keep gaskets in as well as some " flat tools".

They are filing cabinets for prints, roller slides on the drawers and dirt cheap at auction. AKA, good cheap storage for flat stuff.

Zip lock/parts bags, in a flat manner, so they don't bend/warp.
