Here's a dumb question (and I was torn if this should be here or Free Parking but trust the mods will move if deemed necessary)........have a client that wants me to do some gates for dumpsters in a parking lot. I'll of course check with the waste company to see what requirements they have and get locates before doing anything in the ground.............but what do you do for posts in this situation? Just use an auger (on a machine of course), same as you would for fence posts and then fill with concrete? I trust the auger will drill black top ok?

I dunno, I've always drilled holes in raw dirt or anchored to concrete with expansion anchors or epoxy, for some reason the black top is throwing me for a loop.

yup pretty much just dig a hole then fill it with concrete or whatever. you need to be sure to seal the asphalt tho to stop water will getting under it and lifting it.

I would be leery of using an auger in the ashphalt in case it rips it up . I would use something to cut the ashphalt & take it up larger than the auger so you don't run the risk of ripping the ashpalt almost uncontrollably

First off you have to find out if there are any utilities under the asphalt. You do not want to bore into a gas or electrical conduit.

After that is out of the way, remove asphalt and auger the holes you need. If you had access to a pnumatic driver, some small post can be driven down with this tool.

Use a spud bar or a brick chisel and cut the asphalt first. If it's real thick, rent a concrete saw and cut the asphalt out in a square a little larger than the auger. Remove what you cut, auger it out,set your post, fill with concrete, then seal between the concrete and asphalt so water doesn't get between the two and freeze.

Use a core driller; available at most large tool rental companies. I used one for the same purpose at my church once. I think the core was about 4" diameter.

Most dumpster corrals you pour a slab of concrete for the whole dumpster to sit on. In summer the asphalt can heat up and the dumpster sinks into it. The ones that are asphalt around here are just a mess in a matter of a year or two and we don't even get crazy hot temps. I would suggest doing a whole slab to them and design the gate posts into the design.

If they won't go for that then do as others have suggested, cut with concrete saw and auger and fill with concrete.

We do a lot of dumpster gates. As signcrafter said there is usually a concrete pad and we supply bollards and gate posts for the concrete guys to install when they pour. We come back later and install the gates. Most of the enclousers around here have a block wall around three sides to hide the dumpster. If you leave the dumpster on ashpalt it will be a mess in a matter of months.
