can't be worse than HF engine stand. HF engine stand is actually pretty decent for the money.

I wish It had some type of locking pin for that rotational part. you know, just in case.

Get the engine loaded properly--center-of-gravity somewhere between short-block and long-block--and the main problem with rotating it on the stand is due to the enormous friction between the stand tube and the block adapter tube.

My solution is to forego the gear mechanism, but to use a sealed wheel bearing/hub unit in place of the inner/outer steel tubes of a typical engine stand.

A locking mechanism of some sort is clearly needed, or the engine will roll with the slightest provocation.

Just bought one from Summit Racing. I have a fairly heavy 4 cylinder tractor engine on it right now. It rolls it over, seems pretty solid, and it rolls across the floor. It is not as nice as the 6000 lb capacity ($4000) ones we have at work, but it seems pretty good to me.

The catch with properly loaded is that what I do is R&R both heads, and sometimes split the crank carrier if the bearing or crank is being replaced, once the top or bottom is off its not balanced anymore.

Some of the guys in one of the car forums are talking about picking a cheap gear drive and having a fixture made to fit our motors and transmissions. I don't do it often enough not to horse it with a lever and/or shop crane.

I have a geared head from cornwell, I think it is the same as the one from jegs. I will never go back, way too nice of a feature. I would say quality is on par with most other import shop equipment.

Can you post some pix of your solution? ;)

I'm thinking you get a double plus with the gear drive units; its gear drive, and its built stronger partly due to the gear drive, partly due to the increased price demanding better overall quality.

That said, I'm not getting one, too few minutes per year of use. I've never seen one in any of the shops I hang around either.

S-cams can be gotten from any HD truck shop, they will more then likely have a bunch in there scrap bin. I would bet if you buy a slack adjuster from them they will give you a few shafts to play with. I know I didn't even buy a slack adjsuter and they gave be a few shafts.
