Greetings, I picked up a Craftsman (Atlas) 6" lathe and I need a gear because it was missing teeth. I'm new to lathes and don't know what to call this particular gear or assembly. The model number is 101.07301. Can anyone tell me the gear name or even better, the Craftsman part number?

The gear is 24 tooth and is missing in the picture attached. It sets just above and between the two gears shown.

Michael

Here is a link to the manual.

I'm not sure which gear it is. Maybe you'll have better luck finding it on the parts list.

Here is the link to the Sears parts. Some are still available, but pricy.

My grandfather has that same lathe in his workshop (sanctuary). Eventually it will be in my workshop.

Welcome to the forum. :hellobye:

Yeah, I have that diagram but it is impossible to figure out which one it is from the picture. If it was an exploded view, I could probably figure it out :(

That is one of the thread cutting gears, selected based on the thread tpi you want to cut. The gear cover has a diagram on the inside of it (unless you are missing the cover). Those gears are one of the (many) shortcomings of that lathe. But they are available on ebay.

You do not need it to use the lathe as just a lathe. It is only needed for thread cutting.

Thanks deskmechanic! That gives me a start in the right direction. I thought it was for cutting threads but really had no idea what to call it. Now if I could just get a part number . . .

I have the cover, it has been removed so I can clean this poor old dog up :)
