Don't need them often, but man do they come in handy sometimes. Keep borrowing my buddies old Craftsman set. Would like to find a set like that ( 2 and 3 jaw set with variable length). Any recommendations on quality brands or older brands if I can find them?

Arguably the best would be Posilock.

I have the big one and the medium one, my go to pullers when I need something to come off- of course the big one can be a handful till you get it tightened up on whatever you want to come off - but it WILL come off!

Snap-on pullers are very good but somewhat pricey. The yokes, pressure screws and jaws can be interchanged to make numerous configurations with fewer components.

OTC makes good pullers. I also like vintage Proto pullers.

Posilock pullers will seldom come off if installed properly. I personally have NEVER had one slip.

They have a patented locking cage and are rebranded and marketed under a few other names.

I just went out to my shop to snap a pic of a demo model. Should be self explanatory.

I am pretty sure what jagmandave meant was that the thing you are trying to get off will come off, not that the puller will slip off.

I had a couple that I used in a big mfg plant which were 3 jawed with an adjustable pressure screw that also had a mini porta-power hydraulic setup in the center.

These were very fast and paid for themselves quite a few times in the years I was there. I think they came out of the Snapon catalog.

Never had any issues with my Snap On's.

Not sure how good the new import OTC stuff is. Their old US-made stuff was quite good.

Snap on has thread sizes that don't interchange with others so look at thread sizes before choosing a brand as some will interchange some will not.

If you are not in a big hurry, you can probably find a deal on on older USA puller on ebay.

I had a bearing stuck on an axle not long ago, first time I used my medium sized one in a while, what a great tool when you need it.

I have about 6 of the Posi-Locks, same as lis2323 posted but also the Snap-on CJ2002 puller set with the two sizes of connector bars and 3 various lengths of arms. I've used both sets a lot over the years and have full-filled nearly all of my pulling needs with those. Keep in mind, not the cheapest but they flat work.

i have a large 2 jaw USA Craftsman 8" that's been invaluable to me. (my brother often used to pull the Pittman arm on his old Chevy along with a hammer :D )

And a old USA OTC kit for other types of puller. These things have been good for me

I gotta ask...what are you pulling with those huge Posi Lock 3 jaw pullers shown in the photo of post 2

As others have said you can’t go wrong with the older USA made pullers. Proto, Plomb, Williams, OTC, and of course Snap On CJ series. Newer ones like the Posilock’s/Tiger Tools are great it’s just they cost a lot more money.

If you’re looking for one general purpose puller there really isn’t one. But good US made slide hammer sets contain adapters and pullers for general automotive use to get you started.

Urrea are Mexican made good clones of old Proto. Dunno if Proto still makes pullers, they're owned by some conglomerate.

I used a posilock a buddy has and I can never go back to my ghetto elcheapo. Those posilock are worth it all day long.

I have a Taiwanese Craftsman 5 ton 2/3 jaw that looks for all the world like a rebranded OTC 1026. I've never had a problem with it.

There were some nice discounts on some posilocks on Amazon. May be worth checking into if one has need.

I have Posi Lock, OTC (Taiwan), Proto, and ancient HF Taiwan made ( very good basic pullers). IIRC Posi Lock uses non standard threads, at least they do on the slide hammers, but this isn't an issue on the pullers. The Proto are nice but not as handy as Posi Lock. Ive had no issues with any and also really like the OTC.

Here’s a couple if pictures of my two main puller drawers. Posi Locks, Snap-on, some OTC’s and a few other odds & ends.

I have a couple different sizes of OTC bearing splitters that somewhat qualify as bearing pullers but I forgot to take a picture of them as they’re hanging on the side of my Nugier 20-ton hydraulic press.

ZMotorsports , nice collection! Mine is similar but with some Proto added in. The only thing that scares me about the posilock is how thin the vertical section of the jaw is that grips the pulled part. Sometimes you do need this. But when I don't, I use another puller so I don't have a failure

Have never seen those Posi locks before in this part of the world. Wished I had 15-20 years ago when I used pullers regularly.

My meager collection.

Thanks. I really haven't had any issues with the strength of the Posi-Lock at all. Those seem to be the first pullers I reach for and mostly use although there are times when the large upper section prevents use. I'm not sure what the actual warranty is on the Posi-Lock pullers but my bearing supply house that I bought mine from told me he'd warranty them for life for me. That was about 10 years ago and I haven't broken or damaged one yet.:bounce:

Posi Lock has the “typical” lifetime warranty.

FIRST, always lube the pressure screw. I have seen too many used pullers with goofed up threads because they were used dry.

I sell a fair amount of used pullers and you can't beat Snap on and Posilock as others have said. Steer clear of cheap pullers(Chicrap), they will fail. Look at the threads on the pressure screw, finer threads is better.

Most of the older USA brands are decent, even some of the Craftsman.

If you think you will use them a lot, invest in the good ones. Light use, choose a US made brand and you should be fine

Posilock for sure. I had a stuck axle in a BMW and I bent 2 other pullers before I used this one :)

I have a mid size Posi Lock i got for a great deal on a clearout from Sears a few years back. I think it was only $20 . It has served very well.

I had a smaller 3 jaw puller from HF. Not great.
