Are gear wrench universal sockets decent. I'm looking at the 1/4 and 3/8 sae sets. They won't be heavy use and can't really justify sae snap ones, I have Matco metric sets but I use them almost every day and don't have a Matco dealer ATM

Matco and gearwrench are made in the same factory. The 3/8 SAE crome sockets I have are good. I would say on par with any other good brand.

I just picked up the 3/8 SAE and metric. I havnt used them yet but the finish is nice and the action and quality seems very good. With the advance auto coupons I picked them up for about 30 a set. At that price you really cant go wrong. I havnt needed them yet but when i do i'm sure it will be worth it

well I do not have gearwhench universal sockets I have 1/4 and 3/8 chrome and 1/2 shallow impact. they all get used quite a bit and I had no issues so far. actually iam looking to get more gearwrench socket.

I do have sunex impact universal sockets both deep and shallow 3/8. they get the most use and haven broke one yet. probably don't flex as much as the snap on but they are way cheaper.

I'm only seeing impact in the universals; maybe you mean "gearwrench flex"?. If they're chinese or taiwan and impact (swivel) they'll hold up good, if they're "flex" you might have some issues with the joint even if they're taiwanese. Can't cheap it with joints (unfortunately).

Translation...even if you aren't using them on an impact and want the gearwrench stick to the impact swivel rather than the flex. Less chance of pulling an oopsie.

I made a short list of the few Gearwrench tools I'd recommend a couple days ago. Maybe the brand fits your needs, but it largely doesn't fit mine. You can do a lot better for your dollar.

I have some gearwrench stuff that I like better than the snap on stuff I've used. 120xp ratchets come to mind, the XL ratcheting combo wrenches. there's some stuff I don't like to, like the big pack of wrenches that come from sears, mine had a bent wrench from the package. I think they run two separate lines, one for homeowner (sears) that's not that great, and the good stuff.

In all seriousness, what do you recommend?

Brand of hand tools sold at major retailers for homeowners? Stanley and Stanley-BD brands. The quality is consistent, chrome is good, it's largely not **** and I actually haven't ever prematurely broken or gotten upset at a Stanley tool within reason. My car club toolboxes are all stocked with Stanley because they haven't let me down and they're super easy to restock and replace.

If I was a teenager again and just starting out, I'd strongly encourage young Dan to buy Williams and Bahco. The price point is right in line with Gearwrench for the most part, but you wind up with a really good tool instead of an okay - or maybe not so okay - tool. You can get a 3pc set of Bahco Dual-80 soft handle ratchets for about the same as 60 tooth Gearwrench soft handles, for example. A Snap-On head in a Euro made handle for a Gearwrench price? Yes please. Supercombo wrenches cost about the same as Gearwrench long pattern fixies.

In terms of other garage related tools, heck I've got a mix. There's a Rubbermaid roll cart next to a generic metal cart next to a Craftsman tall stack next to a big Snap-On box. I'm not nearly as picky as some may think. I have a Kobalt branded Sanborn USA compressor, every common NA brand of socket and wrench and air tool except HF, and most of it has served me well. I actually used to really like Gearwrench and bought a lot of it, and then I started using it every day and came to really not like it. I've got boxes of their wrenches that I just don't want to use anymore because the ends are spread and the chrome peel is so bad I'd get metal splinters. I don't want to warranty this stuff out because I don't want to use their tools again for the most part.

Gearwrench magnetic spark plug swivel sockets are fantastic. Buy those. The 5/8 at least, it's like $11 at Advance. So good Snap-On even rebrands it, or at least they used to. I had a list the other day...

Good Gearwrench tools:
Ratcheting wrenches box end only. Open end is junk.
Magnetic drain plug service kit.
Serpentine belt tool.
Magnetic spark plug sockets with built in swivel extension. These used to be KD.
Click torque wrench, if you like them.
7 piece pick set.
Articulated extended reach needle nose pliers. Buy them from Crescent if you want them though.
Soft grip ratchets.
Interchangeable shank ratcheting screwdrivers.

Can't think of anything else in their whole line that's decent, unique or a good value. A lot of Gearwrench is gimmicky, poorly made or both. Their long pattern non-ratcheting wrenches are exceptionally bad. Their socket drive reducer adapters are made of incredibly weak metal. Their customer service can't help you replace a broken tool by number if it only came in a kit. I could go on but I've railed on Gearwrench a lot lately.

Everybody keeps putting down the Cman flare nut wrenches, I haven't had an issue with mine yet but I don't use them often. Does anyone have any GW ones and are they any good?

I take it you feel the same way about craftsman/ harbor frieght/ kobalt/ husky?

A lot of the taiwanese gearwrench is too similar to the taiwanese kobalt to be a coincidence (hex sockets for one...some of the ratchets). Now that gearwrench is mainly chinese no reason for buying it if you can get it better made cheaper. Different strokes for different folks. I get rewards certificates from lowes so I gotta buy something there, might as well be tools.:D I think it's good quality stuff but I don't pay retail for it.

I have the gearwrench flex flare wrenches. They have served me well. I love the flex head, and the extra length is nice. I have not touched a regular flare wrench since I got them.

For 30 bucks a set its definitely a good ratio of cost to quality. The matcos are not the same though. If you use them alot they may not be the best but definitely are good stuff.check them out at advance auto.with a coupon code they are a steal.and even free if you check the hot deals section and buy the promo from there.if you buy the 80550 chinese socket set you get 2 free sets.and. chinese isnt always a bad thing.imho.

There are some shameless rebrands, like the serp belt kit and gearbox wrenches, but Matco's sockets have always been pretty exclusive. None of the chrome sockets are the same as GW, not even the same as Cman/Armstrong, and are actually sourced under contract from an outside company. Impacts are from Armstrong. Budget branded sockets from the Adv line are from professional tools (taiwan).

They are far from the same company as you're eluding to.
