gearwall installation costs...

So, I wanted to get a quote to get some of this gear wall installed, because have a bunch of projects going on and figured I'd let someone else tackle hanging of the gear wall. I know most likely wouldn't agree with that, but anyways I got the quote...

44 boxes of gear wall installed. With me supplying the gear wall, they wanted like $7k in labor. 4 days they said. 2 guys.. $109/hr per man. He tried to explain how they do it all the time and they know all the tricks to get it hung the right way, etc.. I know companies got to make a profit, but sheesh!

I can get my attorney to come over and hang it for cheaper.

What do you think a fair rate for hanging this stuff would be? I'm thinking about $40-45/hr for 2 guys.. $25/hr for lead and maybe $15/hr for helper... figuring 2-3 days. Am I far off?

Just figured I'd share.

Wow...

I'd be hard pressed to pay even the $25 / $15. It's basic carpentry. I mean it's literally cut (if needed) and screw it to the wall.

Just for comparison, my BiL and I hung 39 sheets of 1/2" OSB (36 needed some kind of cutting / going around outlets) in my garage in about 16 hrs. And that was taking a lot of breaks - could have done it in maybe 12 if we pushed it.

$7k.. and the guy was proud that he gets people to pay that all the time. He says he normally doesn't deal with people who pick-apart his prices like that..

I have a hard time imagining any "garage guy" hiring this work out. It's measure, cut and drill. It's easy and enjoyable! I look forward to having a project every now and again that requires very few brain cells and makes the beer taste good. This qualifies.

Around here you could likely post a help-wanted ad on Craiglist for $10 an hour and have this thing wrapped up in a day or two. A high school kid with a tape measure could ace it.

I agree, unless you're hiring a friend or acquaintance no need to pay more than 20-25/hr, and it shouldn't take more than a handful of hours.

Heck if you lived close to me I'd do it for cheap, and some drinks & lunch.

I'd agree...$7k is bananas. But...for me...Gearwall's cost was bananas too.

I got slatwall at HD...if memory serves...for $35 a 4x8 sheet. We did the walls of my attached garage and may have used 10 or 11 sheets. Since it's in a split-level house, the garage ceiling is low and we used slatwall from the ceiling down. I get my shelves, hooks, bins, baskets, etc at a local retail supply shop called Gershell Brothers...and they're tough and inexpensive.

Slatwall's heavy, but my wife and I installed the pieces ourselves.

Just another option...

That's "technician" pricing in this area too. LMAO at anyone who would pay 105/hr for any work around their house that doesn't require a license or VERY specialized skillset and tools (ie plumber, electrician, automation tech) I doubt many on here hire any of that stuff out!

FWIW, I just did several sections of my garage...and, the only tricky part is measuring for the outlets.

44 boxes (assuming you're getting 8' foot sheets) is 704 square feet or about $9 a square foot. That seems like a really steep price.

Knowing the boxes are about $100 each, that's almost $12k you're investing in gearwall.

for my 2p - you have to decide how much your time is worth. This stuff goes up very, very easily.

PS: I do love the gearwall. I know it's pricey...but, it looks damn good and is SUPER functional once it's up. (worth the investment, IMHO)

Yea, it was really steep. Going to just install it myself.. Then my cost is only $3500 for the material (50boxes @ $72.79/box).

What kind of screws did you use for the gear wall? Headcote makes some white screws, but really don't have the lengths I need.
