I have a complete 1/4 and 3/8 Gearwrench socket set. I am wanting to get a Gearwrench 1/2 socket set size 10 - 27 and 3/8 - 1-1/4 in shallow and deep. Should I get the 49 piece set and add individual sockets or buy the larger SAE/Metric shallow and deep sets individually?

I was in the same boat, and I went with a Tekton 58 pc set instead. I wanted quick release and non quick release ratchets, and decided to go with the Tekton 1/2 because Tekton is easier to warranty. Not sure if that's important to you.

However if you are set with the Gearwrench set then go for it, cause no matter what set you go with you will be adding sockets to it.

Ebay has a good deal on a 49 pc geawrench set.

I am really impressed with Tekton's website and how they sell the tools you need in a single set.

I got the 49 piece set for $100 from Sears. No need for larger sockets, because those sizes are rarely needed and more apporiate for impacts. I have impact sockets all the way to 36mm.

If you buy the set on a sale, you will have a better quality, same brand socket set, comparing with certain store brand.

Out of curiosity are Gearwrench sockets still made in Taiwan? I bought a set of ratcheting wrenches from a closing Sears that are made in China and they are junk, several bind and seize up, my older Taiwan made ones are solid though.

I have the older set with 84t ratchet, it's made in Taiwan. But I think they are the same with made in China ones, based on the loose GW sockets I saw in Menards.

Yes, there's a quality drop in ratcheting wrenches:thinner, shorter, flimsier. I'm not sure it's because of made in China or specification change. GW if made in China will be made in their own factory: the equipment will be the same/similar.

My old Gearwrench ratchets were like $15 Each. Nowadays, you can buy almost buy a set. It unrealistic to expect the same quality.

Take a look at the deeps. I know in 1/4" they were only broached one nut deep, the same as ordinary ones. So I bought Tekton instead.

The 49 piece set is mostly ok. If you get it, I'd at least go add shallows in 1-1/4, 30, and 32mm. Plus 21,22, and 24mm deeps.
