They're wonderful tools to have. We bought a set years ago (50pc set from Sears) when we needed to run a nut a long way down a piece of all-thread. Since then, they keep being incredibly useful. It gets into places a typical socket/ratchet combo won't because it's much thinner front to back. However, because it's pass-through, it'll do that at the same time as acting like a deep socket. It's generally the first tool I reach for when I can't figure out how the heck I'm going to turn a badly placed nut.

Most of the time, probably. The nice thing about the XL socket stuff is that there's a slight bit of offset due to the depth of the socket and you have N-sockets to cover a range rather than N-wrenches, so it's more compact.

I asked for a full SAE set for Christmas 10 years ago or so. When you need pass through, they are good. The ratchet doesn't accept my usual cheaters, so it's not my go to set.:)
My full set included T45 and T50, which I've used extensively, they lasted far longer than I ever expected having had the Lisles and other mid brands twist and break. The full set also included a ratcheting driver, many bits and extensions, which I really like for interior work on cars. Mine came from NAPA.

Yeah that one.

I work on Japanese cars only so I though the entire SAE half was wasted. Saved my *** a couple of times when a tool turned out to require an SAE socket to service it

the set you've linked, bczygan, is the quarter inch set. I purchased it a while ago to try it out and I wasn't that impressed. The action is pretty tight and I don't see it working really well in tight spaces.

Generally though, pass-through ratchet sets do come in handy. I'd recommend getting at least the 3/8 equivalent set.
