Gearwrench Adapter Warning!!

Okay, so I ordered this Gearwrench adapter set the other day. Pop these into a ratcheting gearwrench and turn that wrench into a super low-profile ratchet.

I've seen it for a while but held off on ordering it. I should have waited much longer. You see, I have reversible Gearwrench ratcheting wrenches with a cap-stop to prevent the wrench from slipping off a nut. That same "feature" means that these gearwrench adapters I now have are incompatible with my existing wrenches.

Zero offset non-reversible ratcheting wrenches and likely the flex-wrenches likely do not have this incompatibility.

The cap stop is a small lip on the top side (side with lever) that prevents the nut from passing through the ratchet end. If you try to use the wrench lever side down, you cannot place it over the nut because of the lip. From what I've seen, this is only on the reversible Gearwrench wrenches.

I know I've seen reversibles with capstop at Lowe's. You can see it in this image of a reversible set here. The smooth ring at the bottom of each wrench is the capstop thing (it's only visible at the bottom because of the perspective of the pictures):

However, the pictures of the reversibles on the Gearwrench website don't appear to have that feature.

my reversible GW doesn't have anything like that
that's just retarded because I might want to use the offset the other way, then what?

My sets were from Taiwan. I bought them about a year ago; maybe the newer ones don't have that feature? To be fair, it's not a terrible feature since it does come in handy when assembling and dismantling things around the apartment and lab.

For those who don't know, "cap stop" is a feature we employ on the box end of some ratcheting wrenches to prevent the wrench from slipping over the fastener.

We sell this "cap stop" version to traditional retailers (e.g. Sears) because consumers tend to prefer that feature. In our professional channels (e.g. Mobiles, Industrial Distribution) we sell sets without cap stop.

I've used teh quick-release adapters and my only complaint is that they pop out of the wrench if you put any downward pressure on the socket...

I guess that's why the spin plate is so large? Although I cannot see anyone putting any pressure down on it without accidentally engaging the quick release button. I guess you could try using a thicker O-ring?

Steve @ Gearwrench - thanks for the info! I was totally unaware that there was a version without cap-stops.

Can anybody please confirm if the following reversibles have cap stops ... tks

https://www.wescotools.com/p-2950-12-piece-metric-reversible-gearwrenchreg-set.aspx

My guess would be that those do not have the stop cap... as Steve from GearWrench said, the stop cap ones are generally found in smaller sets in the homes centers and big box stores. Those are a larger set and still have the K/D label... they seem to be more toward the professional.

Just my rambling thoughts....

I have so many different sets of ratcheting wrenches ... but none with capstop ... wouldn't mine having a set, but can't justify so many sets ... :(
