I've bee eyeballing a metric 5 piece set over at Advance and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on it. It's the open end ratchet which I've never used before. I have the other gear wrenches and love them. Thought this would come in handy on the tight nuts on the motorcycles I work on where I have no clearance. Constantly putting the open end on and off can become tedious when there is a long bolt with lock tite on it.

Price is 49.99 and I will apply the Big25 code to the 60 dollar purchase bringing it down to just under 30 out the door.

I picked up the craftsman ones to try out since they were on sale for $20. They're pretty much useless. They don't ratchet easy enough, so the fastener becomes too loose for the wrench but too tight for your fingers. I think I've had 1 situation where one of them saved my ***, so I let them stay in my box.

Sounds like when it's too loose for a socket on a ratchet but too tight for fingers.

Was this because of that spring-loaded black part?

X2 on uselessness. I had the $20 craftsman set and gave them away. I do think the black plastic piece has something do do with the bolt turning issue, but I've never tried the type without. The offset ends also annoyed me, IMO they should be straight.

There is a "gimmicky" Husky set that Home Depot sells. Double open ends, but supposed to fit both metric and sae.
I have a set and it has come in handy a few times.
$19.99 at HD. I think they still sell it but I can't find it on the website.

Yes but with a ratchet most of the time you can hold the extension or socket still to get the ratchet to spin the gear and then reengage.

I could only use an open end wrench while tightening down some nuts on a pto on an old fuel truck we had for parts. Couldn't fit a box end on it or a socket. very tight clearances. i don't even know if an open end ratchet would even work on it. I had to flip the open end after each turn of the nut.

I picked up a set at Advance a few weeks ago for $15. I threw them in the tool box. I think it was a 5pc set in SAE...I'd have to check though..

Please let me know which set. I looked at Advanced yesterday and they are 49.99 in the store. I should with the discount code be able to get them for $30 out the door. Interested to see how you got them for $15. I might be going back in person for another look.

The ones they have in the store are 5-Piece. The guy at the counter did mention that they ran a sale on the other ones in December and they are back ordered quite a bit. Are you happy with them. I'd like to get them if they don't tend to constantly slip off of the nut when ratcheting.

I havent even used them yet, in fact I remembered I bought them when I saw this thread..I've been real busy at work the last month, so all projects have been put on hold...They seem to be okay....I probably should have tried them out when I got them home...
