All,
Thanks for all the feedback.

Let me cover a few things:

Young son = 8. He’s becoming interested and joining me in some of our repair jobs around the cars and the house.

OCD = slight, non-medicated currently.

"Suspect shopping methods" = These were very much an impulse buy. When I realized I wouldn't be able to complete the set I though I'd reach out for an opinion here. I wasn't aware of the Tekton or GW bogo offers so now I'm glad that I did.

The plan will be to let these live on my work bench for now, use them as needed and pass along to him when he's responsible enough to look after them. Thanks for the info!
Seems you not in a hurry I would keep eye out for the gearwrench sae 1/4 and 3/8 sets with 84T ratchets so got a nice pretty cheap matching set. 84T ratchets pretty good I never had issue with any of mine and they get used pretty much daily, any GW I got the older stuff though . The size markings and finish design on GW sockets better than tekton, tekton ratchets also the common asia 3 screw 72T, Tekton warranty is better but for individual item values of 2 to 10bucks I got little interest in warranty and I doubt tekton warranty will remain as good as currently is .

I find these perfectly polished Taiwan sockets don't look so perfectly polished when they have been used for a while. The ratchets especially handles stay pretty nice but the sockets get heaps of fine scratches and after a while you kinda wish they weren't so shiny to begin with. But they do look nice sitting in a toolbox unused, you open a draw & its like jewelry. My satin finish & Stahlwille tools seem to not get trashed after earning their keep. But everyone seems to mention Tektons 'nice finish' when talking up the tools.

Yeh I love stahlwille's unique satin finish, super durable and still looks good after decades of use.
Facom do a very similar satin chrome like stahlwille.
Not a fan of polished, had a set of snapon swivel socket wrenches good 25yrs old, not used much but had usual open end jaw chrome chipping and scratches from use, looked awful next to my stahlwille that lot older and used hard daily .

I'm going through the same with my son now. I got him the 1/4" and 3/8" socket set for around $40 and a full set of metric wrenches (non ratcheting) for about the same.
