Have the gearwrench pinless impact socket sets been discontinued ? I see they have introduced a new x-core pinless impact socket that looks like is made in china now. Wonder if all apex pinless impact sockets went to china now ?

The USA sets were made by Armstrong, who shutdown operations earlier this year. The Gearwrench sets were discontinued with them.

I hadn't heard about the new import pinless GW sockets. I'm betting they're the same as the Apex made Husky pinless adapter that Home Depot now sells.

So what about Matco, do they still offer the pinless swivel impacts in their tool line ?

The gearwrench Pinless impact swivel sets are still available. However, as someone pointed out, Armstrong the previous maker of these impact sockets went out of business. You can probably still find US made Gearwrench, Craftsman, & Armstrong versions online.

My understanding is that the Xcore versions are made in Taiwan which makes sense since Armstrong is no more and most everything from Gearwrench is either made in Taiwan or China, peoples republic of.

I haven't been on a MATCO truck in quite sometime but, MATCO has new suppliers for everything Armstrong used to make so, I'm sure they still have pinless impact swivel sockets. However, where they are sourced, I don't know, sorry.

I have the matcos made by Armstrong. Been awhile since I've been on a truck. I'm sure if I need a replacement it won't be as good as the Armstrong version.

National Machine makes them for Matco. Armstrong was just a name put on a tool line that was owned by Apex. Apex tool group was owned and sold by Danaher (they own Matco, well fortive does but fortive is danaher) to Bain capitol. When Bain consolidated 4 factories in texas into 1 in south carolina, US apex flopped. I believe theyre still behind gearwrench and other Taiwanese/Chinese offerings.

Last thing I read stated they'd continue to manufacture a limited number of products in that SC plant. Either that was BS or this wasn't one of them.

I don't believe the pinless swivels were made by NMG. NMG did make a lot of Matco though. They could be now, but they previously were made in an Apex factory (the SC one).

well the craftsman 3/8" pinless adapter I just got as a replacement is now china made, vs the old USA so guessing all the apex supplied pinless offerings are now china made.

That is interesting that these are coming out of China now. Thanks for the heads up.

They plainly stated they were going to be a warehouse for imports at APex in Sumter SC that all US made products were being discontinued

thanks for the link. i was wondering why i couldn't find it. seems like they only sell it in 1/2in drive. i was looking under 3/8s and didnt see one. i may have passed it.

I found one at the store across town. I asked why my store didn’t order more and the kid behind the counter looked it up on the computer and said it was discontinued. Take that with a grain of salt but if you want one I wouldn’t wait too long.

lightning02,

Gearwrench manufactures a 3 Pc. (1/4", 3/8" & 1/2" Drive) impact universal joint pinless set under its X-Core branding. The model # is 84960. Here is the Gearwrench webpage with information about the set: X-Core.

Walmart.com stocks and ships for free the above Gearwrench X-Core set. I just purchased one. Here is the link to it: Walmart.
