gearwrench ratchet suprise

So all of my ratchets have been upgraded to snap on over last couple of years and have been very happy with them. I was getting rid of some old stuff to a friend and he gave me a set of gearwrench long locking flex head 84 tooth ratchets in 1/4 3/8, and 1/2 and I have to say so far they are pretty nice. I tried them all 3 out on my truck taking loose every ground and cleaning them and from what I've seen they are a nice ratchet. When he first gave them to me my first thought was to trade them off for another snap on but so far I really kind of like them. My locking flex head snap on ratchets have the comfort grip and these don't so I will put them to work when is greasy/oily for a while to tell the tale. Rarely something surprises me, usually I am disappointed by poor craftsmanship and can't find anything to complain about these yet.

I have the Armstrong versions, the Maxx locking flex. I think they are almost the same mechanically. They are really nice ratchets. Snap On doesn't seem like a step up from these.

I loved my 120XPs when I first got them, but with more use, they kept getting rougher and rougher. In some of them you could feel that the two pawls had a different amount of tension/back drag on them, making the ratcheting action feel very unstable and uneven. Working on selling them now and replacing them

So something made overseas and that's 1/4 of the price of snap on is "impressive" for someone that never tried them before??? Your kidding me.....

I got the complete 3/8" drive Gearwrench socket set that came with two 84 tooth ratchets, AND the complete 1/4" drive socket set that came with the 120xp ratchet for ....... (wait for it)....... $109.. we'll make a believer out of you yet..

I belive that's what one of the "cheap" S/O ratchets cost.. you should try the sockets.. you might **** yourself..

I'm in love with my 1/4 in flex head I bought at Menards for $15. And my 120xp I bought at advance Auto for $25. Very good tools for the money.

Here - $25 shipped for the 3/8 AND 1/4 Crescent (gearwrench) roto head ratchets.. I have these too. You can't beat em for the $$$.. You can disassemble the heads easily to grease or clean them.. This is the cheapest price for these..

Why not get some rebuild kits for them?

The 120XPs are much nicer than the 84, imo. My 1/4 flex head 120xp might be my favorite too. Perfect size for 8,10,11,13mm engine bay type work. I'm slowing upgrading all my 84 to 120. GW sockets are quite nice as well. Really hard to beat.

Every Gearwrench ratchet I've owned suffered from auto reversal any time I used one.

Can anyone speak to a better experience with the newer stuff?

I really enjoyed everything about them except the damn thing changing direction every other stroke.

All my GW is less than two years old. I'm not a pro but i wrench on the race car often and I've never had that happen.

I have had a 84t ratchet jam when i used it as a hammer. I had to take the cover off and reset the pawls to fix it.

I love my set of gear wrench stuff and considering the price it is not bad at all. better than any new craftsman stuff.

I've been looking to get a set of 120xp's for my " on the road tool box" I have the chunky raised panel Craftsman's right now and can't imagine being stuck on the side of the road not being able to repair something because of them.
