GearWrench Ratcheting Wrenches - Reversible

First post here and want to thank these boards for all the gear lust lol. Would definitely consider myself a tool newb so any advice is appreciated. Purchased a brand new Honda recently and would like to work on it here and there. Weekend mechanic and definitely nothing professional.

Over the past few weeks, I've managed to buy socket sets in all different sizes and various ratchets (e.g. GW), along with some combo wrenches (e.g. Wright). Now, I've turned my attention to ratcheting wrenches. I'm pretty sure I'm going GW here, reversible in metric/SAE for now. Not sure the flex headed is needed but can be persuaded!!! lol

But not sure of the different sets, and what sizes I need.

For the GW metric, it's the 12 piece vs. 16 piece. The 12 piece doesn't have 21mm, 22mm, 24mm, and 25mm. What are these size wrenches usually used for? Necessary for my car or future use?

Same goes with the GW SAE sets. 13 piece vs. 8 piece vs 7 piece. The 8 piece does not have 11/32, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, and 1-inch. And the 7 piece doesn't have any of that, including 5/16. Any of this needed?

Also, I'm using the GW site for reference. Definitely not paying full retail for these and gonna look for BOGO deals as they come.

what's SAE for? actually you are buying a new Honda, so why do you need a tools for? lol

10-19mm wrench will cover 90% work you do at home (flex-head wrench come handy 10,12,14)

Get the bigger sets! There will come a day when you need one of the larger sizes and to buy it individually will probably cost more than the additional cost of getting the big set up front.

The larger metric wrenches will be necessary if you do suspension work on anything foreign or domestic from 90s on up. This includes motorcycles except for Harley which is mostly all inch fasteners. 13/16-1" are used on way to much stuff to list here. Get them.

No one on this site will tell you to buy fewer tools.

For ratcheting wrenches either Napa Carlyle line or proto and the best imo

I think gearwrench is easily had and there sizing will be depending on style i think the best all around would be the flex and the straight will fave the most sizes

Most everything on your Honda will be metric. I would concentrate on that set first, if you find you get into other stuff that needs SAE, then buy it.

Yeah, might concentrate on metric like you said. Same goes with the Wright combo wrenches. Haven't ordered yet and was gonna get metro and SAE, but probably gonna hold off on the SAE and just get metric for now.

Buy as big and as many different kinds of metric stuff as you can. You will find a use for it someday and prices will only go up.

I bought all 4 of my sets from Advance Auto Parts. I bought the first two sets on sale for $30 each. Used my speed perks coupon while they were on sale for the 2nd pair of sets, ended up paying $10 for each of them. No regrets, use them all the time. MM for the new stuff, SAE for the old junk and stuff around the house.

unless it is bogo I'd put less focus on sae. I've got a set of wright 1/4-1" and a set of 3/8 sockets so I can work on the mower and other small projects. Everything else I do is metric; my volvos, mazdas, bicycles, even a lot of home assembly stuff is metric now and I'd focus on that.

Thanks for the advice everybody. Gonna start with metric only, starting with the Wright combo wrenches and the GW reversible and flex ratchet wrenches.

Sometime soon maybe get a couple good torque wrenches and a good cordless impact driver unless you can afford a compressor that will push the CFM to drive air tools.

Thanks for the info! Just searched the model numbers on AAP and the prices are ridiculous. Something like $300 for the metric 16 piece lol

Thanks for the info! That price for the GW 16 piece metric is only $20 higher than anywhere else I've seen, and it comes with the SAE set too. Prob going that route.

Also, might be adding the GW flex and stubby ratchets as well lol

For flex: the best price I've seen for the 9902 is around $160 so probably going to go that route. I see that I can get the 9902 and SAE flex ratchet set for $250, but don't think the extra $90 is worth it
