Gearwrench Selector Problems

Last summer I bought the 8 piece reversible ratcheting wrench set from Advance Auto. I had some trouble with the selector auto-reversing on the 12mm.. Apex sent me another and it has been fine, but I really don't use it that often.

Had the same thing happen to the 10mm, but the selector jammed completely and the wrench doesn't ratchet either way. Sent Apex another email, and a month later I finally got the replacement.

That 10mm works great for pulling the exhaust nuts on my CBR, in fact that's what I was using it for when it broke the first time. Had to remove the exhaust and replace the gaskets today, and the selector jammed AGAIN! These bolts are only torqued to 9 foot pounds, it's not like I was abusing it.

The selector on my 84 tooth ratchet jammed up once too. I was able to get it free with some fiddling, but had Apex replace it under warranty anyway. The new one has worked fine, but I really haven't used it much either.

I'm not going to use this set any more. Suggestions on what to replace them with? I can get the Snap On set for 50% of retail because I'm a student. Blue Point is discounted as well, but not as much, and I don't know how much better those are than the GW.

I've had the Blue Point set for years and never had a issue and I work them pretty hard. I don't live by the there not made for breaking loose or final tightening rule. There much heavier then GW and I like that. I think you'd be happy with them.

[/IMG]. I like the sk g pro. The one shown is a 17x19mm. These sway bar links were rusted bad. I pulled very hard to move nut. As for gearwrench ratchets, I have had them reverse on me. I like Armstrong ratchets.

Never seen a reversible wrench that really held up. My Gearwrench non reversible have been good.

I was taught to break the nut/bolt with a box end wrench and then use a ratcheting wrench to remove it the rest of the way. I know the larger wrenches can take the abuse, but one shop I worked in had a shop tray of the GW ratchet wrenches and the smaller sizes were always broken or being warrantied out. If they jam up I usually give them a smack on something hard and it frees them up, then spray some penetrating oil in them.

Tried both, neither worked. I'm guessing one of the pawls snagged the ring gear and is now pulled out of place, but I'm not a ratchet expert.

I sold a GearWrench socket set years ago because the ratchets would auto reverse almost every time I used them. It's a shame too- the sockets were incredibly nice.

I have both the reverseable and non both sets have been fine along with the dog leg set. Fingers crossed they hold up as i use them daily.
I bought an entire set of 1/4 chrome Metric and SAE deep and shallow and love them. I also have the flex head 120xp or whatever they are, they've held up to abuse. Maybe give them another shot?

OP has found what I've been saying for years. I went thru this w GW reversibles circa 2006. That set is now in my truck bag for last resort roadside repairs. I warrantied several sizes (10mm was one of them) and the replacements DID THE SAME THING!

I went w SK back then. The SK reversibles have most definitely "held up," even to more abuse than I should admit here.. They impress me everyday.

My SK's are NLA, but others here have said they're a common Taiwanese/Kabo design. Highly recommend.
