Does anyone know if Gearwrench sells a full socket set similar to the craftsman 299 pc set?

I have an older dual marked 299 USA set. It's a great deal. About a dollar a socket when it was on sale. I'm glad to have it. No filler at all. Only one of each size in both 6 and 12 point. I bet the Asian ones are great too. The warranty is the reason you buy Craftsman. Not a big fan of the RP ratchets but everything else is good. I have a set of Gearwrench sockets I keep in my car. those are fantastic for the money as well. They are China though but I did trade the ratchets in for the 120XP's. Great car kit except they used SAE deep well sockets in this kit so it really wouldn't do me much good. I guess they know we will make another purchase to get them added.

This is a pretty killer deal, then grab the half inch set too

The craftsmen set is meh...it comes with a lot of filler.

I have both of those sets already but I leave them in my truck. I wasn't sure if they have a full kit minus the ratchets that I could keep at my house but it may be easier to just reorder what I already have. They appear to be very nice quality so far.

The larger Gearwrench sets (239/216/165/141 piece) come with their 45 tooth quick release ratchets which I consider to **** compared to their 60/84 tooth ratchets but, that's just me.
I would look at their tech education master sets or the sockets only sets offered by drive size. There are usually great buy one get one specials out there too. Shop around for the best price with free shipping as there is a wide price spread on Gearwrench tools.

I'm an aspiring DIY'er and very much a newbie when it comes to tools. I found the Gearwrench 239 piece set on Amazon (KD Tools KDT 80942 239-Piece Metric Socket and Ratchet Set) for about $240 which I thought was a good deal. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase. That being said, after reading about the 84T and 120XP I wouldn't mind eventually replacing the rachets themselves for an upgraded version.

For me an import part of the socket set is having a case where I can keep everything together. Does anyone know if the form on the 84T or 120XP is different than GearWrench's 45 tooth rachets? I'm wondering if I do replace the rachets down the line if I can put them in this case or if I'd need to store them separate from the rest of the socket set.

You could take your ratchets to advance auto & compare them. Also might be worth a couple bucks more to buy them there for easier warranty. Keep your receipt though. They can't pull up sales from another location.

As a "Very Senior Citizen"...

I'm only trying to give the Forum a little "Adult Supervision"...

He is correct about one thing, though...

I definitely need some new photos...

Jeez, was looking at tool discounter and I see the 80942 set was listed for $180.00. On top of that, both the routes that pescados666 and Oldldh suggested would have been better paths to go. Last time I buy a tool without consulting this forum first.

Oh well, I'll just have to remind myself that I still really like these sockets even if there was a better way to go.

This has been a big topic for some time. I emailed Apex/Gearwrench about it once and they told me there was no difference in quality. Whichever plant was set up at the time and could complete the order got the job. Since no one has ever actually performed a metalurgic test, who's to say if there really is a difference? Some argue the chrome is better on the Taiwan stuff, but all that means is one plant spent some extra time on them. Another complaint is the large "lobster" claws on the Chinese wrenches, but for all we know that could be part of the design to provide a larger contact area. Not a cheaper/lesser quality tool.

I've had different luck depending on the location. One of the ones that said no was my old shop's main supplier & I talked to the delivery guys every day. Fwiw I've only broken 2 sockets so it's not like I'm showing up regularly with piles of rusty yard sale junk.

Yea its completely different here in TX.....Auozone, advance, and Napa all freely swap out any hand tools sold in there store no questions asked. even the autocraft is warrantied. its gives me faith in using gearwrench ratchets....if it breaks swap it.....I live an a large city though so maybe thats the difference.
