wait, why would anyone need 1/4in drive *impact* sockets???
I thought the same until I got mine. I use them daily at work with a 1/4" M12 impact wrench. One of the best investments I've made.:rocker:

Funny thing is I lost my GW 8mm and replaced it with a Snap-On since the price of individual sockets was about the same. The Snappy has not held up as well (far more distortion) as the GW sockets that have had far more and harder use.

They're a blessing. I don't even see a point of using the chrome over them on a ratchet because they're pretty thin.

Are Gearwrench sockets still made in Taiwan? About 5 years ago my old coworker used Gearwrench sockets as a master tech with no problems, they held up great. I used to use their tools a lot but have since slowly upgraded. Gearwrench has never given me any problems

The only fault I see with GearWrench sockets is this:

1. Install the socket on an extension
2. Press the 6pt/12pt end of the socket against the drive end of the extension
3. Observe the socket move out of its rest position and then spring back to its rest position when you let go

This may or may not be a discrepancy to the user. I personally find it very annoying. Other than that, in my opinion, the sockets are very well made and are ascetically pleasing.

This was mentioned in another thread, prob by you. So I verified it. Then I checked some harbor freight, craftsman and snap on sockets. They all do it too. Then I interchanged between various sockets, extensions, and ratchets. All do it to various degrees. Even Snap On on Snap In.

Don't even bother with that set. Go to princess auto and buy the pro point master impact sets. They go on sale every couple months. I bought the deep 10 -36 mm for 125 on sale. Lifetime warranty and they're pro quality cr-mo steel. I'll post a link tomorrow.

I'd buy Sunex over both those brands. Sunex is Snap On quality, at GW price. Made in Taiwan. There sets come in hard plastic cases and the sockets are laser etched and engraved. I have the same Sunex and Snap On impact sets and they're identical. Most tool trucks sell Sunex now and they have lifetime warranty. The store where I bought mine only carry Sunex now and did away with SK, Proto and Blackhawk because no body would buy anything else. Here's a pic of the Sunex and Snap On impacts. The Snap On is on top and Sunex on bottom in the picture below. The red boxes in the other pic are the Sunex. They could be a bit smaller, but I wanted them in cases for when I need to take them on the road with my cordless impact wrench.

In thee princess auto thread, there is a side by side comparison and it's obvious the pro point is made by the same company that makes sunex. Princess auto has a easier warranty.

check out the prices of williams sockets in comparison to gear wrench the taiwan ones are pretty cheap ive got a good bit of them.

No one stocks them in canada so warranty would be tough.

I live in the USA. I didn't realize that was where the OP was from. No Princess Auto around here. Not sure I'd buy tools from a place with that kind of name anyways...

Valid point, sir.

But ive never seen one on a shelf in states only by mail order.

Mail order here as well. If OP hadn't of pulled the trigger on the GW, I would have suggested Williams as well. Even tho warranty would take a couple weeks, it's not often you break a williams/SO socket. You really get a excellent value with williams USA.

I've got the williams 3/8 metric set from tiawan, there is a semi-local place that actually has all the small sets in stock and will warranty if you bring something in. Their price was maybe a touch more then amazon but they put you in the system so they can look up the purchase.

Majority of my sockets are truck brand with a few Proto, Wright and USA Williams mixed in, but I have Gearwrench in semi deep, shallow and deep impacts in 1/4" drive. No complaints at all

I have thier master set of torx, it's **** if you make a living with them. For a hobbiest, it's ok. Your money is much better spent going with VIM or sunnex.

I don't know about Gearwrench, but I like SK which is American made and much more reasonable than the tool truck brands. I'm not sure if that's out of your price range though. They have some pretty good package deals for 1/4, 3/8th's and 1/2 inch sets. I bought mine from tooltopia.

I don't like S-K sockets because they are too shallow inside.

Can't go wrong with S-K short sockets, Williams, Wright, Armstrong and Proto.
Some or half of the stuff is the same as Matco for a lower price.

Has anyone used Gearwrench hex and torx sockets, they are very reasonable but want to make sure they will hold up
Bondhus has some reasonably priced sets, not cheap but reasonable and are good quality.from what I've found the sets in storage cases are a lot more then the sets without.

Where are you finding Sunex so cheap? Where I'm looking the prices are two to three times the cost of a GearWrench set with the same number of pieces.
