Gearwrench stubby standard ratcheting, should I pull the trigger?

So, I originally thought that I was going to switch out my flex head Gearwrenches for the Craftsman locking flex that are on sale here... until I realized that Craftsman only offers those in certain sizes. Some of the equipment I work on has odd fasteners, and so I need certain sizes such as the 14mm.

So anyways, I currently own Craftsman pro non-ratcheting sae and metric, and gearwrench ratcheting flex heads sae and metric.

The same local store that has the Craftsmans on sale also has the Gearwrench standard ratcheting stubbies on sale for $35 a set, which is damn good because the stubbies almost never go on sale (compared to the standards).

Since I need stubbies anyways, I'm thinking about grabbing them because they're cheaper than the sae and metric cman pro stubby sets.

My worry is that the standard gearwrenches have no offset, and finger clearance... then I thought that finger clearance probably isn't an issue on stubby wrenches anyways, becuase you can't really get your fingers under them since they're so short.

Thoughts?

Do it. Got mine when Sears had them half off. When I need a stubby, I always go with the GearWrench. My C-man non-ratcheting stubbies haven't seen light of day since.

The short stubby gearwrench ratcheting wrenches come in real handy in the very tight spots.Any Matco dealer sells Gearwrench too,you pay a little bit more.I know my Matco dealer sells them on his truck

Absolutely, they will serve you well. If you're worried about knuckle clearance, you can get the flex head stubbies but, they're not cheap and rarely go on sale. I think the only companies offer a reversible stubby ratcheting wrench is Stanley's Blackhawk, Snap on's Blue Point and Williams but,, there may be others. For $35 you can't beat the Gearwrench stubby set.

Just an opinion, but when I NEED to use a ratcheting wrench (stubby or otherwise) for a particular spot, finger clearance usually isn't the concern. Mainly, I am looking to get into a spot that a ratchet won't fit, and a regular wrench can't be turned efficiently. Therefore, a "flat" ratcheting wrench suits the job best.

Can you tell us what store has the ratcheting stubbies for $35? I meant to pick up a couple sets last time Sears had their 50% off, but missed the sale. Thanks!

I agree. I use the hell out of my GearWrench stubbies, and never have an issue with no offset, etc.

My Craftsman pro stubbies went into my road trip/junk yard box. Don't need them often, but when you DO need a stubby, you can't live without it. For those infrequent times at the junk yard, I can make-do with non-ratcheting stubbies. At that point, I'm just glad I've got a stubby wrench on hand!

It's OSH, a west coast hardware chain. Last time I announced an OSH sale here everyone freaked out because they hadn't heard of it.

They also carry Craftsman and are having a 40% off sale on select Gearwrench and Craftsman until the 31st.

SCORE!

I managed to pick up both sets... they were normally priced $59.99, then discounted to 40% off which put them at $35.99

Then I had the 15% off coupon, which put the one set at $30.59

Once I got to the register a really nice girl told me that they also had a 15% off paper ad flyer, and she could ring me up seperate and use my coupon for one and the flyer for the other... so I got both sets at $30.59

$61.18+tax for sae and metric 16pcs total, not bad at all :D

I picked up both sets during a 50% off sears sale. Ive only used some of the metric so far, but they've been great, in some spots nothing would've worked faster/better.

Sweet! I stocked up at the last 50%ish off sale at sears. When they're this cheap, you just have to go for it!

I have wayyy too many sets of wrenches now. I barely use the floppy adjustable ratcheting ones or the stubby pro.

But I'm sure glad to have them, you know, just in case!

Yeah, I don't really have any discretionary spending budgeted right now, but these definitely were on the WTB list, and this is easily a once in a year deal if not rarer... the stubbies don't seem to go on sale hardly ever, especially at a store that doesn't price them high to begin with.
