I was surprised reading the Tool brands ranked by quality thread to see Gearwrench showing up among the big names. I didn't want to derail that thread so I am starting another to ask thoughts about Gearwrench tools.

When I first saw the brand on Amazon, I assumed it was yet another of the many Chinese junk tool brands and haven't even considered ordering anything from them.

What are your thoughts on Gearwrench?

I have a set of offset reversible ratcheting wrenches and a set of flex head ratcheting wrenches. Both have been excellent. The offset pair I’ve had for years and are probably my most commonly used wrench in the shop. No issues, very happy with them, and price was cheap! I have no experience with other GW products.

As you know it's the old EASCO(KD, Craftsman) brand moved to Taiwan where they have a large factory. At best it's another Taiwanese brand, at worst they contract over to the mainland. As a Taiwanese company, they at least use their own name unlike the importers.

Locally what once was KD specialty tools are now labeled Gearwrench. A large local tool store chain is using them as their main tool line. Most industrial and auto parts stores use Jet brand, a local importer.

Even the American made tools were mid line, so expecting more from an import would be folly. I've bought and used them with out compliant.

Based only on what I personally own and use: 84 tooth ratchet I have is junk. I got a warranty replacement and it's the same. Self switches and locks up. The non reversable ratcheting wrenches I have are fine with me. I don't stress ratcheting wrenches and have had no issues. I have a few six point sockets and I like them.

They're just another mid range tool company in my opinion. They do have a wide product range and are readily available.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder :D

Merk doesn't like anything that doesn't have Snap on stamped on it and don't get him started on socket detents. :wtf:

My only real heartburn with Gearwrench is that their expansion killed off most of the mid grade US Made mechanics tool brands. KD, NAPA, Armstrong, Craftsman, Master mechanic, Allen, and other house brands went the way of the dodo bird. :(

To me, Gearwrench quality was at its peak when then first came out when everything was made in Taiwan. I think when production was moved to the SATA plant in China, People's Republic of quality slipped a bit. The other issues with Gearwrench quality arose when they made sets for special sales at Sears and other big box type stores. The ratcheting wrenches in those sets often didn't have individual part numbers on them, had things like capstop, and generally weren't finished as nicely as the same wrench from a different source.

Another problem with Gearwrench is that many people have unrealistic expectations for the tools themselves. They aren't as good as any truck brand so, quit comparing a Gearwrench tool that costs a fraction of the price of its tool truck counterpart, to the tool truck version :wtf:

However, in many instances Gearwrench tools will perform well enough for most techs at a fraction of the investment. I own many Gearwrench tools and I have to say, aside from a mis stamped 22 mm combination wrench (it was a 21mm), the tools have served me quite well over the years in a professional repair setting and have never really disappointed me.

Gearwrench is a viable mechanics tool brand that won't break the bank but, as with all tool brands, you have to judge the specific tool on its own merits. Not everything in a brand's lineup is the best of the best, and yes Merk, that includes Snap on  :D

I have been happy with my older made in USA and made in Taiwan and newer made in Taiwan Gearwrench products. I try to avoid their made in China products.

I have a lot of Snapon, MAC and Proto but honestly the Gearwrench stuff is a much better buy for the money. The Gearwrench ratchets I never cared for so I never purchased those. If something happened to what I have and was going to start over my new tools would be primarily Gearwrench.

What are your thoughts on Gearwrench?

I have their Chinese made flex-end metric and straight SAE ratcheting wrenches, and their Taiwan-made 1/2" metric ratchet and socket set. The Chinese stuff has thin chrome and some visible flaws and the chrome has worn through in spots to the copper on the most-used wrenches. I have also had a few issues with them locking up in moderate use (I don't expect them to break rusted fasteners).

The 1/2" set has beautiful chrome and while I've only used the fine-toothed ratchet a few times, I have not had any problems with them. I would put them a couple steps above the wrenches in quality. I got a great deal on them at a Sears Outlet a couple of years ago.

I would buy the Taiwan ratchets again. Will look to upgrade the ratcheting wrench set at some point to a different brand. So a real mix of experiences here.

This is Garage Journal, so unless it’s stamped “Snap-On” or “Made In Germany”, it *****.

I have quite a lot of GearWrench tools, as well as Craftsman, SK and other assorted brands. I have not once had a problem with any of my GearWrench. The 84 tooth ratchets are durable and take a beating, as well as their sockets. I’m also a fan of their screwdrivers. The pliers are Meh, at best. I’ve never personally had to warranty anything through Apex, so I don’t have an opinion one way or the other.

For the money, their comprehensive 243 piece mechanic set can’t be beat.

All in all, they have their pro’s and con’s just like any tool brand. Buy what you like and what works best for you.

Cool to see so many folks love GearWrench. My experience is that the quality is similar to decent brands like Tekton, etc. But GearWrench is more flexible with promotions. So I just need to be patient and sooner or later, GW will have a promotion that blows all competition out of water. At the promotion prices, nothing else is even close with respect to quality price ratio. Everybody needs different level of quality and has different ability to pay, so the call is somewhat subjective.

The Tekton 1/2 set is a better value than GW. That's a rare exception.

My ratcheting wrenches were cobranded as Mastercraft Maximum for Canadian Tire. Stamped Gearwrench on one side and Maximum on the opposite. Every few months they go on sale for $50 CAD for the 7-piece flex or reversible set. I’m not gonna complain at that price!

What are your thoughts on Gearwrench?

I'd rank Gearwrench (previously KD) entry level pro grade, above most store brands (except maybe Carlyle). The completeness of the tool line is hard to beat, and there are always good sales going on, which brings the price down to store brand level. Pretty safe and affordable bet for a home gamer or a start up mechanic.

They aren't garbage and have a wide variety. Only tools I have is a set of combo non-reversible ratcheting wrenches and spark plug gap coin for at home. The wrenches have seen some real pro use. A few will jam up but held up well for the price... I tend to avoid them because I've heard the warranty is real hit or miss

The funny thing about gearwrench is that you can buy the ratchet wrenches off of my local snap on truck- gear wrench brand.

I have been very impressed by Gearwrench’s hand tools- my coworkers and I use them in a severe service environment and they hold up well. The BOGO deals you can catch on them tend to be pretty good.

I have a lot of appreciation for the tool truck brand tools and their level of quality but for a lot of stuff I cannot justify the prices of tool truck or even industrial brands because I have to buy a large range of tools for what I do. Gearwrench and the other Taiwan brands fill that gap pretty nicely.

The only caution I can give is that warranty experience can greatly vary.

Some of the tool truck guys sell them but I have a feeling they probably won't warranty for you, if not bought from them.

Snap-on ratchet wrenches are stupid expensive. If I were to upgrade, I'd get the SK x-frames

The real deals on Gearwrench are usually around the holidays. The local Advance Auto here also runs a lot of 50% off deals on their sets.

I have only had to warranty a few things over time but I just do the online form and get a email a couple days later showing a tool is on the way with tracking
https://www.gearwrench.com/warranty-replacement-form couldn't be easier just like TEKTONS which is also good.

I have GW ratchets and ratcheting wrenches and I have not had any problems. The quality is very good for the price, and even better when on sale or bogo deals. I don't use anything other than a breaker bar to break loose a nut or bolt, so I generally don't break stuff. I'm just a DIY home/auto guy, so your mileage may vary, but I can recommend GW based on my good experiences so far.

I remember when Japanese tools were considered low-quality and Taiwan tools were just plain junk. Now, compared to Chinese tools, the Taiwanese tools are considered premium...

The responses are pretty mixed. I might try a GearWrench wrench or something when I need one but my 40-year-old Craftsman stuff keeps me pretty well stocked. I generally buy a hand tool when I misplace the Craftsman - most often to find the Craftsman again after the replacements come in but I'll check out Gearwrench again next time I need something.

Thanks for the great discussion.

I’ve got a set of GW reversible offset ratchet wrenches. I blew the guts out of the 10mm the first time I used it. I hate the reverse lever, it’s always getting bumped the other way. I never use them. OTOH I’ve got a set of older craftsman non-reversible straight ratcheting wrenches that have been stellar.

I've got some old reversible ratcheting wrenches that were co-branded Ace Pro or something like that and I really like them. I got some straight ratcheting wrenches a year or two ago and they were junk just like their line wrenches. Swivel impacts where meh with one DOA.

The only thing Gear Wrench I'd buy now is their sockets---even the chinese ones aren't that bad. I'm seriously considering picking up another set of E torx sockets.

I have the Gearwrench serpentine belt kit, it works as intended, it definitely isn't top quality but for the price it's an OK buy for what it does!!!

Hi richfinn,

Do you own the original (3414D) or the relatively new (3680D) ratcheting model?

Which component(s) of the kit do you feel are not top quality?

Thanks,

Dave

I'm not sure to be honest, it has the ratchet wrench but it's not a flexhead version

The "pass through" style sockets the chrome is a bit "rough" with my kit (but they do work Ok), the long lever bar is now a little rusty as well despite the black industrial finish

The ratchet wrench is Fine and the case is decent

It cost me about £40 I think, it's definately earned it's keep

I forgot I had anything from GearWrench, but these worked great when I had some hard-to-reach hoses...
1KsVgXy.jpg

They're better-finished than the HF equivalents I had that wouldn't quite reach, but not incredibly well-finished considering they were a multiple of the price of the HF where the main flaw was being a little too short. They work great though, which is mainly what I care about.

Ratcheting end works fine. Open end spreads like a lot lizard. So many ****** knuckles. Impossible to warranty. Moved them into my Pick n Pull kit & would throw them away if I weren't so cheap.

Oh ****, a topic I'd like to consider myself more versed in than others.

I am

A.) Mechanic 40 hours a week
B.) Owner of ~3,000 dollars in Gearwrench tools.

I don't think I have broken a single tool this year except my 17mm sleeved lug nut socket, but I've broken three (Snap on/GP/GW) I've now been given a wurth by the shop Wurth guy so we'll see how that holds up. And for reference the tools I use from them throughout the year include their

  • screwdrivers,
  • picks
  • carbon scrapers
  • flex head ratchets in all 3 drive sizes
  • stubby flex head ratchet 3/8"
  • long pattern 1/4" and 3/8" standard ratchets
  • regular ratchets in all 3 drive sizes
  • quick release ratchets in 1/4" and 3/8"
  • chrome metric shallow and deep sockets in 1/4" and 3/8"
  • chrome metric shallow sockets in 1/2"
  • chrome semi deep metric sockets in 1/4" and 3/8"
  • chrome sae 1/4" semi deep sockets
  • chrome metric swivel sockets in 3/8"
  • 12 pt 1/2" chrome sockets 10-19mm
  • chrome extensions in all 3 drive sizes
  • 1/2" metric impact swivel sockets (back when they where USA)
  • 1/2" metric impact sockets,
  • shallow etorx socket set, deep etrox 1/4" socket set
  • allen socket set
  • torx socket set, long torx socket set, mini torx socket set (usable with a wrench)
  • serpentine belt tool kit
  • spark plug socket tool kit
  • oil filter cup socket took kit (USA made)
  • Long DBE 0 offset ratcheting/non ratcheting wrenches 8-24mm
  • regular combo ratcheting wrenches 8-19mm
  • 120T digital torque wrench
  • indexing prybars,
  • sleeved lug nut sockets in 19 and 21 after blowing apart the 17 after 4 months of constant use
  • duckbill pliers (new, USA made)

- Those are all the tools I have at work as I looked at some pictures of my box for reference, I probably missed a few, I've got probably another 3 socket sets (duplicates and more SAE) and some extra ratcheting wrenches, 90T flex head ratchets, and more at home.

Needless to say I've not been fired because I don't work with only Snap on tools, and I've not been struggling to complete jobs because I use Gearwrench tools. In fact, because I have so many tools I often have people asking to borrow odds and ends, and nobody ******* cares if they're Gearwrench or Snap on, and nor do I care to loan it out because if it gets lost or broken its affordable (That said my fellow technicians are awesome and don't break my **** and always return it) - Almost everything is made in Taiwan on that list above except the impact sockets and the combo ratcheting wrenches. Might be a few others, but at one point I had pictures of almost all the COO labels because people kept saying so and so is made in China. It wasn't. I'm also working on some of the most expensive and complex consumer cars out there I'd wager and I don't say that to brag but to put it in perspective. Needless to say the tools are affordable and will work just fine for whatever it is you're planning on doing. :D
