Gearwrench is updating itself with a new logo and motto. I guess "GET IT DONE" is being replaced with "FORGE AHEAD". Along with redesigned screwdrivers & Pliers with additional color offerings.

On a side note, Gearwrench in also releasing extra long 120xp fixed head ratchets. there is a 9 inch 1/4 drive, a 18 inch 3/8 drive, and a 24 inch long 1/2 drive model. you can also get a set part# 81271 that includes the 1/4 & 3/8 drive ratchets together.

Perhaps they will have these new tools on display at SEMA.:pimpflash

Nice! I'm a huge fan of gearwrench, those extra long ratchets will be pretty slick.

Also curious to see the new pliers and screwdrivers, I like that orange color they have, and it would kinda match my orange snap on torx screwdrivers!

I had trouble getting three flex heads warrantied. Went to Sears... then Fastenal...
took 1-1/2 months and a huge time waste for me.
No more for me.

I’m very curious to see how the new designs and advertising will turn out. I’ve always been on the fence about buying Gearwrench, but could never bring myself to do it. I have used their comfort grip ratchets and they are awesome.

I’m in the market for a new master Torx socket set. VIM doesn’t appeal to me and I’ve narrowed it down to Carlyle, Gearwrench or pony up a little extra for MAC (which is same as VIM apparently). Anyone here have the Gearwrench and have you had any problems with them?

I've got a smaller GW set of Torx sockets, and they seem good to me. I've only used them on a handful of occasions, and I'm not a "pro" but they've gotten the job done, and don't seem any the worse for wear.

A friend warrantied three this past week at the local Advance Auto. I know there is one in Seattle. Do they stock Gearwrench at that one?

Having the extra leverage from long ratchets are nice, but IMO, flex heads are more useful/practical at that length.

Gearwrench already offers a 24 inch long locking flex head ratchet. Perhaps they will offer extra long flex head ratchets in 3/8 & 1/4 drive as well :dunno:

Not wanting to hijack my own thread but, why doesn't VIM appeal to you for torx bits? I think you're missing out on the best of the three you listed.

Lol, as dumb as it sounds, I’m a brand snob that always sticks with names I’m familiar with. Craftsman, NAPA, MAC and DeWalt are the only brand of tools I’ve bought. I’m slowing trying to overcome Old Glory not mindlessly waving in front of me on the package. Baby steps.

Are the VIM Torx sockets that good that once I buy them, I’ll never look back? Right now, my only torx/hex sockets are Craftsman USA “GK” and I’m afraid to put any heavy use on them.

I have warrantied a couple of GW things. Did one through GW website and one by just calling them directly. So far no trouble.

I just purchased the Gearwrench 84 piece Torx and hex set. I am Very satisfied, so far. It is a pretty comprehensive offering in a blow molded case. It is not for everyone but I like to have it organized like this when I go on the road. From my perspective, the only thing it is missing are SAE long hex ball sockets. It has the Metric ball hex and Torx in long. If all you work on are cars then you wont miss them.

I give it two thumbs up........So far. I have some other Gearwrench tools but never broke anything. Therefore I can't comment on how they handle warrantees. Personally, I would just call them and go from there. Box stores don't want to deal with it unless it is their house brand.

Why not just call Gearwrench? If you have to send it back that's easy enough to do.

Sooo you would knowingly buy the marked up Mac set when you could just buy the VIM set, simply because it has MAC on it? Do a Google search on VIM. They're good.

On another note, I have the Carlyle torx socket set and is my go to. Very nice, quality set.

I finally broke my Gearwrench T30 tamper torx on Friday, and didn't want to deal with calling in the warranty, so I just ordered a single Blue Point socket online to replace it.

I didn't even think about the fact that an Advance Auto Parts opened up in town earlier this year, and I bought the set online from AAP! I could have just warrantied it on the way home, dammit!:lol_hitti

Maybe you still can if they stock it and you didn't pitch it. I doubt they would want to order one in special for a warranty.

very interested in the long 1/4" rat. any pricing info? I must have missed that.

Me too! I poked around the net a bit. Looks like the 1/2" will be about $70, 3/8" about $55, 1/4" about $35. 3/8" + 1/4" set about $80.

I tend to agree, but having both fixed and flex in my box sounds like a good plan too. I might have to pick these up.

That's not a bad finish, it's an "artsy" photo of the ratchet with dirt/grime on it, an "action shot" if you will of the tool being used/after use.

it looks like pits in the metal

Do you have a Carquest or Advance Auto Parts in your area? If so, beat feet it down there to fondle one in person.:bounce:

Although every tool company produces a turd now & then, Gearwrench usually cranks out some well finished products aside from the black Friday special sale sets they make for Sears and other large stores.

Not liking the new colors.. looks like something cheap they'd sell at Costco.

Agreed. I liked the old logo, colors. The new stuff looks like the branding of some no name asian tools that pop up at places for sale that you have never heard of before.

I have worked for companies that have done rebranding and make no mistake about it. It is all about changing public perception. The quality of the products did not change a bit.

As far as GW rebranding....the color change on the screw drivers may help you find it faster when your tools are all over a crowded bench. That is about it.
GW is also manufacturing some things in China. That does not automatically mean they will be any worse or better than they have been......But my bet is more mfg defects slipping through.

I think it is a wise business move to renovate the current GearWrench brand.

They are basically saying hey we are not using the same black and red everyone else is. Milwaukee released a bunch of red hand tools, which might have promoted the rethinking.

Their biggest barrier is going to be getting a lineup of tools that make themselves stand out. Something that is a must have for people who use them daily. Same way the ratcheting wrenches were when the first introduced them.
