I'm looking to buy a set of long pattern metric wrenches, preferably 6-24mm.I'd really like to get a set of Williams Supercombo wrenches, but they're kinda out of my budget for now,but on Snap On's website I noticed that Williams Taiwan made wrenches are the same length.I'm like to get some thoughts and opinions about these vs the Gearwrench long pattern set,as far as durability, fit, etc.I have read several posts about the Gearwrench, but not so much on the Williams.I'd only be using them occasionally,or else I'd just save for the US made Williams. All my other tools are American made, but I'm not opposed to buying foreign,as long as they are good quality.

Personally, I'd take a look at the Carlyle Long Pattern Non Slip wrenches, I got myself a 6-19 mm set and the fit / finish is outstanding for the cost. I think I paid $80 all together. They are sold by Napa, here's a picture of the set...

I got the gearwrench ones in metreic and sae. Use them all day long in a shop setting with no problems. In fact they get used more than my cm raised panels. Have no issue with them go with the gearwrench.

+1 for gearwrench. I have the 36? Piece set in sae and metric. Off corner engagement too.

Also +1 for Carlyle. If I didn't already have my gearwrench ones id have the Carlyle. More of a flank drive open end. Chrome looks better. Plus warranty would be easier.

I have the gearwrench set. For back ups they are great. For primary wrenches, not great for everyday use. I bent my 9/16 last week on a rounded wheel bearing bolt. It looks like a noodle now. The box ends are good, but the open ends are not stellar. I paid big money quite a few years ago when they first came out. Todays sale price on them make them a bargin, but not a great wrench for me. I do quite a few alignments and can only use the open end of a wrench. I like them but I dont love them.

I wouldn't mind a used set of U.S. wrenches.I did find the 18 pc. Gearwrench (7-24mm) for $72 on Amazon.Haven't had a chance to check out the Carlyle set.

To be fair, that is the first thing I think of when I hear or read it, and GW is quickly becoming most of my tools.

I'm interested in this thread but have not much to contribute.

Those Blackhawks are pretty nice looking wrenches. It has crossed my mind recently to buy a set of black wrenches, just because. This set would kill 2 birds with one credit card!

I'd suggest the used USA industrial brand route, SK, proto, williams, etc. Nothing wrong with Gearwrench but you might be able to save a few bucks. Although it seems from my experience that used metric wrenches are like 1 out of 10 compared to SAE wrenches used. :dunno:

The Gearwrench long pattern fixed combo (non ratcheting) wrenches may be the worst tools with the Gearwrench name on them. See up there where rtole said he bent his into a noodle and the open ends are bad? That's consistent with what I've seen with my sets. I bought two sets years ago when I was outfitting my shop. They don't see any use now, pretty much just waiting to send them to scrap.

I wouldn't buy Carlyle, no idea who makes them. Never heard of them before Napa changed their tool line. SuperCombo Williams is worth the money.
