Those who are having trouble getting a warranty exchange with Gearwrench wait until Advance has it back in stock. I've seen them exchanged there without hassle but they have to have it on the shelf as a single.

I'm glad to see they are going back to Gearwrench.

Can confirm, Advance/Carquest is reverting back to Gearwrench branded tools. Our corporate liason forwarded an email from the home office saying (basically) that the TEQ rollover was a bad idea, everyone hated it, and that we are switching back. No word on a timeframe though, but imagine it may take a few months to restock the DC's with inventory.

It’s all Apex Tool Group at the end of the day. They make GearWrench and the TEQ Tools were all just existing rebrands and made it out of China.

I just looked at the video Cfendrick shared above and it pretty much suggest the TEQ products are rebranded Creasant with a COO of China. The Advance I go to has never got in any TEQ and just as well as they are abruptly being discontinued. It sure seems odd that a big company would do an about face like that with out any explanation. I am not complaining. I just find it very odd and have liked GW products in the past. Moving forward I hope Advance will still be good with handling hassle free warranties on GW

I hope that for sure!

I think GW knew they were dead without Advance...and made them a better offer to get back in there..?

The replacements at Advance were simply rebranded GearWrench, as reported here,so I don’t know how you could come up with that conclusion.

GearWrench has thousands or retail outlets carrying their products.

99.5% of Americans have likely never set foot in an Advance Auto Parts store, and likely never will.

Like where...? The only other places around me that carry GW are Grainger, Fastenall, Motion Ind. Walk in any of those places without a Commercial acct and you will be robbed.. Plus they are not open evenings or weekends so nobody that works can go there anyway..And TEQ is rebranded Channellock.

The link to the video above pretty clearly shows the TEQ's are rebranded Creasant which along with Gearwrench are made by Apex Tool.

99.5%? Not sure where that came from but it is still a lot of people. What percent of people in North America will ever buy a ratcheting box wrench, which is there flagship product. 99.9%? Just guessing.

If you look on the GW website it will list where you can buy them.
In addition to the industrial supply houses you listed it includes Home Depot, Sears, NAPA. Plus just about any place that Sells tools has them available on their website. Including Lowes, Tractor Supply etc,. Some tool trucks carry Gear Wrench. The counter guy at Advance Auto told me that the Performance truck has them.

I will say from personal observation that stores like Napa and Home Depot have a limited selection of GW products. Usually limited to ratcheting box wrench kits. Where Advance has a pretty large selection of sockets, box wrenches, ratchets, screw drivers, bit sockets etc.

It is unclear why the abrupt switch.
It is entirely possible Apex saw a drop in sales and that may have motivated it but we just don't know. That may also explain the recent poor warranty service as is the subject of this thread. My sense is that it is a win-win deal for both parties. I am sure it will come out over time.

Despite what a mechanic might think, the vast majority of Americans will never own a ratcheting box wrench, or even know that such a product exists.

That is exactly part of my point.
For them (GW) to be profitable they don't need the vast majority of Americans (North Americans) as customers. It is a niche market and they need to be a good value to those who do know what a ratcheting box wrench is and to young up and coming tinkerers who will soon learn.

To Angry Joe, I am sure it varies from location to location. I was at a Home Depot last night and did not see any GW.
As I said earlier, My local Advance had a decent selection up until the change to TEQ which they never brought in. it will be interesting to see what happens.

Last year the Sear near me had a good selection of GW individual ratcheting combo wrenches in both Metric and SAE as well as sets and tool kits. They had a great tool selection for both Cman, GW and some other brands like Lisle. They are now closed.

There seems to be a lack of continuity across stores.

There's one Advanced Auto near my shop/house. I step in there and the clerks all stare at me like I'm going to shoplift or rob them. They see me looking for something for 15 minutes and no one says if I need help so I walk out and haven't been back since going on 7 years now.

I find it odd that you think they are afraid of you but you were resistant to ask them for assistance. Most times when I am in a store the clerks are right on you unless they are busy on some task.

Clerks are trained to ask a customer if they need assistance if they suspect they may be shop lifting.

Back to the GW subject. I was in my local Advance Auto last night and they still have a display with some GW product remaining. I mentioned to the clerk that I read Advance will be returning to GW and ditching the TEQ line of tools. He said he has not heard that and they were expecting to get some TEQ product in shortly. He also said sarcastically he would not be surprised.

I just warrantied a small 90° pick from my 84000D set the other day. It broke while pulling a cotter pin (yes, I know, I used the wrong tool, but it was a VERY small cotter pin). Called up the warranty number and explained what happened, lady on the phone was super kind and said "i'll just mail you a new one." IT was literally that quick and painless

I get that people on here are having issues with warrantying tools with GW sometimes, but I really think it boils down to your demeanor on the phone and who is actually on the other end of the line. I've always been polite and respectful to customer service reps and I find that it always gets me miles ahead of my initially intended outcome.

Will I continue to buy GW tools? Meh, I really like their ratchets and I find their screwdrivers/scrapers/picks extremely comfortable. I also feel that their combo wrenches, even though COO China, are an excellent value and of great quality, but that's about it. I'll probably purchase additional tools as needed based off of the excellent feedback found via this site, but I wouldn't totally write off GW for good. Still a good company putting out good tools for the homeowner/weekend warrior.

Just want to report recent positive experiences with GW warranty. I have a 10mm XL ratcheting box from a set that gradually started to slip. Before sending the request I went through the bad experiences posted here, and physiologically prepared myself for similar or worse.

I finally sent an email through their warranty webpage last night, mentioning that I can not send a picture showing how a ratcheting wrench slips gears and will be happy to send a video. I got a confirmation this morning that a replacement has been approved and sent. I suppose that GW has improved the helpfulness of their warranty department.

I locate in Canada, just in case that makes a difference.

Wow I read some of these post and really amazed me. I have always just call the one 800 number and they send me a prepaid label. I mail it in and get a new one back. It’s inconvenient but they honor their warranty

I have a 56 piece Gear Driver ratcheting screwdriver set like this which the T handle will not ratchet at times.
I took a picture of the handle filled out the warrantee form from the Gearwrench web site sent it in .
After not seeing any reply from GearWrench for about a week I inquired about the claim, a couple of days later I get a email saying the new part is in the mail.
I use this kit (stored in the laundry closet) for the quick fixes around the house to tighten, assemble things. Saves me a walk down to the basement or workshop garage for a simple task,

I want to keep my set complete. That's why I want to replace them.

I have a whole other set of Snap-On 3/8's I use all the time. The Gearwrench was my junkyard set.

And to answer everyone's questions, no I did not use a cheater bar. I used a Snap-On 3/8 ratchet but it's long, something like 24"
I have got a lot of tools. I have a stupid amount of tools… but I have never seen or heard of a 24” 3/8” drive ratchet.

Was it custom made for a specific job… that you were, obviously, not using it for? The longest 3/8” drive ratchet I have is 18”ish.
