I stumbled across them looking through Google images. From what I can tell the ratchets are made from a plastic. Not sure how durable they are, but they look pretty cool.

Anyone know anything about the quality of the brand? They are made in Germany so I figure they are at least above average.

They have some good looking stuff, but I can't read german... http://www.gedore.de/

Hahaha, what do you guys think they are made for? I'm not going to buy any, I just like seeing stuff that is different.

They have some really nice looking pliers.

haha well They actually have thee kart sprockets called "extron" made out of some crazy plastic. They outlast typical aluminum sprockets... Ive used them, and they last like twice as long, BUT they are very prone to snapping when you through a chain... this sort of plastic snaps instead of bends. Im sure they are fine for like 1/4 drive stuff, but I doubt youll see any mechanics yankin on those things in 1/2 drive lol. Id maybe consider one, because they are probably fairly comfortable to use, but I question thier durability.

I think eschoendorff hit the nail on the head, I do not know about that pair of pliars, but I am almost certain that those plastic looking ratchets are for live electrical work.

It took me awile to remember where I have seen that Gedore name before, but it finally came to me. I have seen that name on a line of plumbing tools in most of the hardware stores I worked at years ago, as I recall their quality was so-so.

Gedore used to be a popular make here in the UK. My parents bought me a small socket set when I was about 10 years old (I must have been a terrible child to buy things for – While other kids wanted the latest toys all I wanted was more tools). The sockets have lasted over 30 years (the ratchet is long gone – not a plastic one though), they look as good now as they did then. In fact they look better than some of the Snap On sockets that I have bought since – Mainly because they are not highly polished so don’t look bad when they are in regular use. Of course they are probably made in China now so I can’t really say what the quality of today’s products would be.

They said their XL wrenches are chrome plated but they don't mention them being polished . . . ?

I believe those plastic ratchets are simply intended to be light enough to slip into a pocket, for low torque general maintenance. They're not marked as being HV safe :headscrat They seem a bit of a gimmick, to me.

I have a few Gedore sockets amongst the collection that I got from my grandfather. I would imagine they're late '60s. As with other German tools, the surface finish isn't as pretty as the US norm, but, as vince says, it is extremely durable. They're showing very little wear, whereas I've had chips and flaking on much newer shiny chrome sockets.

Of course they are probably made in China now so I can’t really say what the quality of today’s products would be.

They're still primarily made in Germany and Austria, and they still appear to be of very good quality. One of my numerous 3/8" ratchets is Gedore. It's not the 'go to' tool, and certainly hasn't been used enough to get a real feel for its longevity, but it feels strong, runs smoothly, and is very well finished.

Local market tools are made in Brazil and SA, [and are much rougher than the main line tools]* - these turn up on Ebay a lot, sometimes priced higher than new German items :wtf:

Edited to add: *it seems this is erroneous, see below

Gedore tools are made in Germany, or South Africa - most of my stuff is Gedore - lifetime warrantee - still unused.

6-36mm 12 point sockets, 6-32 combinations and whole lot of others live in my box, and that little quick wrench as well - made from some type of thermoplastic - seems to be pretty tough.

I have used a gedore deep 19mm 6point non impact socket on my race car wheel nuts for 10 years in my impact wrench - still perfect, and those wheels come off after every race, or every practice day - probably on and off 30 - 50 times a year - final tightening is done with a Beta torque wrench and the same socket.

www.gedore.co.za has an english catalog for you.

Stuff is not cheap either - divide the ZAR pricing in the catalog by 7 to get to USD - of course they are discounted heavily by the major tool providers locally.

The finish is much more durable than polished chrome.

That's interesting, it looks like the SA tools are actually close to the German, at least in appearance. I'll see if I can grab a pic. of the very rough 'Gedore' wrenches I've seen, which I'd been told are of the standard sold in SA and Brazil.

Their stuff is not cheap$$$ even heavy discounted. An oil filter wrench over $50 At $10 OK. I understand a specialty tool costing $$ not an oil filter wrench.

Talking about expensive - take a look at 6004660 - 65mm combination spanner - nearly 800USD - for a single spanner - what you would do with it I don't know? security? or mother in law control?

Their crowsfoot spanners are interesting - never seen any others like them.

That small plastic ratchet could just be their version of those hundreds of Chinsese made pocket ratchets you see at auto parts store by the check out. Gedore looks like the typical no frills German made hand tool, stout but not pretty. They sure do like 1/2 drive over 3/8 drive though.

does it say they are 100% plastic?
could it be insert molded with a steel housing and arm under the plastic?

These are quite good looking! Not all Gedore is plastic junk, some of the best!

gd3093gu-3.jpg

Yeah....some of it is metal junk...

If you haven't read my other thread here's a pic of my gedore wrench...I'll leave it up to you to judge the quality...oh...the crude grind marks can't bee seen on the sides of the wrench in the photos below...

You are comparing a tool made under licence, exclusively for the Indian market, (at least) 22 years ago, with their current production...
