Re: Geek's Garage @ 8000ft.

Have been too busy for shop work but got back to it a bit today.

Moved everything in preparation for cutting a giant hole in the wall:

...then decided my 12v hackzall (that I use on my van build) wasn't strong enough so went and got more power :D

This thing goes through a 2x4 like butter :willy_nil

How do you like those Milwaukee tools? I hear good things about them.

Are you planning on getting the window and insulation done before winter this year?

Do any good ADV riding this summer?

Re: Geek's Garage @ 8000ft.

Hi Andy,

I'm pretty pleased with the Milwuakee stuff. Originally I only had a bunch of the 12v line but the power of the M18 line slowly finds me acquiring more and more of those :)

1-M.jpg

I hope to get the windows and insulation done before this winter but I have so many projects on the go I don't know if it will happen. The one window will go in this week but I haven't gotten the other 4 windows yet. :(:

I haven't gotten a lot of ADV riding in this summer - I've been a little more focused on the mountain bike this summer as I've had some health issues and I'm trying to get back into better shape - but I'm sure there'll be a couple of epic runs before the summer ends :)

cheers!

Awesome read Geek, thanks for sharing! I can't be the only one who initially thought the title meant you had an 8000sqft Garage - your post describing the slope and mountains confused me hugely at first!

Re: Geek's Garage @ 8000ft.

Has been a busy summer. I didn't get as much done on the shop as I wanted but I did get the 5x5 window installed. Loving it!

One of the reasons I haven't gotten much done: :D

Re: Geek's Garage @ 8000ft.

I have one question..... seeing as I'm also a warbird guy.. who was your dad?

My Dad was Thomas Walker.
He worked at American Aero Services in New Smyrna Beach, FL with Gary and the gang.

He passed away a few years ago at the way-to-young age of 63 :(

cheers,
Ed

Neato toys. The window came out nice and will make winter work more pleasant with a view.

I'm planning a family trip to Ouray next summer so looking forward to getting back in the mountains from Flatistan.

Re: Geek's Garage @ 8000ft.

Sorry gents have been too busy to post updates. I got four more windows for the shop but haven't had time to install them yet. I'll take a few minutes now and post some pics...

2016 was the year of the Jeep :D

I bought a 2016 Rubicon Hard Rock and took it from stock to a 3.5" AEV lift and 37" tires... put a 10K winch on it, etc etc. Also did a bunch of wrenching on my buddies Jeeps too (we installed 3 lifts, 4 compressors, 2 winches, etc etc).

The jeep turned 1 year old last week - 22,000 miles.

Nov 2015 - brand new:

Really nice photos! I love how those jeeps are trail ready from factory, and your tasteful upgrades look very functional without taking away from the on-road capability! Nice!

OP, I just have to ask, what camera and lens setup do you or whoever took those pics use? Killer!!

Sony NEX-7 with a variety of lenses (my glove box is setup as a lens bag :D).
Favorite lens: 50mm prime 1.8
Most used lens: sony 18-200 with stabilization.

Thanks for the kind words.

The jeep really is capable of everything we like to do in stock form. The 37" tires are about comfort. When we get offroad I drop the pressure down to 11psi and no matter how rough the trail is it becomes silky smooth. Makes my wife very happy :)

Here you can see the size difference - all that extra air makes a great cushion!
fd645c1d90bd81f04df014e2373d0a62.jpg

The Blistein remote res shocks and AEV progressive springs help too:
4c9aa8dd7c69af0606436af8674b7d09.jpg

I have an ARB twin compressor under the hood which allows me to bring each tire back upto 32 psi in about two minutes.

a58a837c722a775735bdf3c94e2d44eb.jpg

The thing is a daily driver and the KO2s are much better in the snow than the factory mud KM2s were (which is a big deal up here at 8000ft).

Although when you make poor decisions even 37s don't help lol

one of the best parts of wrenching with your buddies (and we did a ton of it this year) is getting photos of them in compromising positions -lol

The layout of your house and garage is something I'd expect to see in a movie! In fact, it reminds me of Commando, the first few scenes with Arnold in it. Your house looks like the house in that movie, cut right into the mountain!

Awesome work :D

Considering the amount of time we spent on the floor and on jackstands this year I think a vehicle lift has gone up in shop prority

Which is why I keep telling my wife I need an excavator... to increase my yard size -lol

The highlight of living on the side of the steep terrain is our deck. You are in the treetops. :)

With the climate up here we generally open all the windows and the front door in may and don't close them again until October. There are no bugs and It is delightful.

We pay for that in winter -lol
