Generac 5000 Generator Engine Modification

Hello,
I'm a newbie to this board. Purchased a Generac 5000 generator, in which only the engine works. I intend to use the engine to run a chipper shredder. I have remove the generator section. I found that the engine has a tapered rotor which allowed the stator to be connected. I would like to put a pulley on this rotor. I want to know if anyone has tried this and how they solved the problem. Basically, how do you add a pulley to a tapered rod?

Not sure if they make a kit to go from tapered crank to keyed crank with a pulley.You may have to replace the crankshaft

Find out what taper it is, and find a pulley the size you need with enough meat in it, and have the taper cut by a machine shop. They will probably have to cut a keyway also...

I agree, I haven't seen a tapered crank pulley I would have the crank milled down by a machine shop and have a key way cut in. Easiest way

That was what I was thinking of doing, but since I have machine shop equipment, I will try it myself. I might try using the part from the stator that fits on the taper and just enlarge the hole in the pulley to fit the stator shaft. I was hoping that there might be a workaround.

Beware that end of the engine may not have support bearings; it counts on the generator head for them.

I'd honestly sell the engine to someone for their generator and put a "standard" one on.

the only difference between a tapered shaft engine and a keyed shaft engine is the crankshaft. They have the same PTO hookup and the engine case does have a support bearing.

since you have a machine shop, do you have casting capabilities? If you can make a casting of the crankshaft and mill the casting into a 3/4 keyed shaft adapter that slips over the tapered crankshaft, you can use a 3/4 pulley. You should be able to bolt the adapter on and use the pulley.

Just pull the crank and turn it down, I've done it several times, works fine.

I do not have casting capability, but I saw some 3/4 shaft adapter sleeves on ebay. I am not sure how to determine which is good for my engine.

Thanks everyone for the input. I decided to use what the generator gave me. I made a sleeve by cutting rotor before the taper starts. I remove the sleeve and milled it on the lathe to fit a pulley. I then cut a keyway and a key on the milling machine. The pulley attaches to the engine shaft, but I am not sure if it will stay in place.
