Was using my lQ2000's hooked in parallel to power my travel trailer when one of them shut off due to over load. But it won't reset, called Generac and all they will say is to take it to a dealer. So if someone out there knows anything about testing one of these it would be much appreciated.

The second purpose of this post is to warn and rant about garbage customer support companies have, especially when their dealers are staffed with a bunch of brain dead minimum wage don't know if it's a ratchet or a hammer tech college drop outs.

No I don't bother with the "dealers" in my area (last time we dropped off a generator with the one legitimate shop they burned up several components and told us it came in that way and the two other dealers are guys working out of their garages, not that I care but they have no diagnostic equipment and no guarantee on their work) and I don't want to take a hundred mile round trip to try another dealer.

Unfortunately I think I need someone that can help diagnose a circuit board (if that is who you meant, sorry electricians here rewire houses), I'm leaning towards the inverter module has failed but before I throw $500 in parts at it I was hoping for a more definitive answer. Or maybe if I'm really lucky someone here knows even which part failed on the board haha. No insurance on them, the deductible would probably be as much as a new one so.

Usually the inverter board, which will cost near a new machine. Real generator shops won't usually touch them since the cost in parts plus diagnostics and labor doesn't add up. Generac has never been good with inverters, their older Impact RV units being a prime example.

I may still be able to get you a service manual if you want to shoot me the model and serial off the machine.

I had a 1000 watt Champion badged Kirpor die. Champion was good about sending the parts, one week after warranty. But I learned a lesson, gennys are either red or blue.

I bought one of these from Zoro with a 25% coupon, so it was a good deal. What a POS!

I tested it and it seem to work on small loads but when I tried the coffee maker it reset or bypass or whatever. I measured the coffee maker and it was below the max watts the gen was suppose to handle. Anyway, we moved and I looked into this again later and all it did was surge up/down with a light load. Took it into a warranty dealer and they cleaned and adjusted the carb and still not running right, Generac would not replace the carb under warranty because at this point it was 2 years or so old but look brand new.

Anyway, paid the $80 for the diag and sold that POS on Ebay with full disclosure for like $250 or something. Good riddance!

There are some exceptions,
3M is really good with customer support for safety products,
But generally, companies don’t bother hiring or training customer service people with in depth product knowledge, because they don’t see the customer service reps as people who bring in profits.
If a customer service phone representative has enough knowledge to actually be very helpfull over the phone, there is little reason that person should be a phone representative, instead of actually being out fixing generators. Plus, the paychecks for this type of phone work are usually sh!t.
The only reason you might have customer phone representatives who are knowledgable niwadays, are if someone gets injured and can’t do actual repairs, or gets old enough to retire, and stays around for the easy but lower extra paycheck.
Most companies just prefer to get rid of these people rather than keep them around.
New guys who get hired for phone tech support generally would need a lot of training to understand how to help, and companies aren’t going to bother with the training, or even help the employee if he wants to learn on his own.

Don't ask.
What would you expect from a call to customer service? Can you name one company that would consistently reply to a call like this with "replace part XXYZZ"?
Honestly there aren't many problems that can easily be troubleshot over the phone and fewer can be repaired remotely.

There are many. Consumer products prob more rare but, industrial products they mostly always do.

I can name many companies 2 stories.
Heisler
And Anthony Barber associates.

Heisler i had an electrical problem, transferred me to their electrical engineer, first "do you got schematics?" No? Ok imma send the PDF to you, Now test X and Y you should get this, test A and B you should get this. Test C and D and press this should get this. "Jumper these 2 wires and tell me what happens. Oh that happened? "Ok This component is bad ill send you one."

Anthony barber, ok connect to internet we willl monitor your process. And find the proble. Ok this is the problem. We will correct it and update your system remotely.

So yes, it does exist. Ive also had luck with 3rd party companies, like IPS i mentioned above.

So can consumer companies do it? Of corse.
All problems can be troubleshoot over the phone.

Give me the model number of your Genecrap and i'll be able to look up a manual. Make sure you have a decent digital multimeter, most of your time troubleshooting will be Ohming out components for continuity.

However if a shut-off fault will not reset either the conditions creating it have not been rectified or the main logic board has failed.

I emailed the head of customer support and he had someone get in touch with me and they gave me the option to buy the service manual (0H5039 Rev C GP-I GP-iO iQ and iX Diagnostic Manual) but no instructions on how to order it. What I don't understand is why I wasn't given that option over the phone.

Hello I work in small engine shop and repair the engines on numerous gas generators. The larger Honda units sometimes wont start or even charge if one the components including switches goes bad. We will download schematics and back trace a bad component. It isn’t to hard if you understand schematics. We will not spend too much time on it because we just work on the engine side of things. If it gets too complicated its sent out to certified Honda repair for other component problems.

The REV B service manual I sent you should have all the tests you need to find your issue, and decide from there if you want to put the money into repairs.

Usually the Generac Revisions to the service manuals are pretty minor; Some added repairs for warranty issues, correcting misprints, info on firmware updates, etc. I still have my older air cooled HSB book with all my notes over the years, and the newer revision with not a whole lot of extra stuff added that I've been able to find.
