Generac Pressure washer problem

I have what I consider to be a nice Generac pressure washer. I've had it for 15 years or so. Maybe longer. It's always treated me well until last summer. It still runs great, but it started spraying water from in between the aluminum housing with the black bulb on top and the brass pump. I've always been pretty good mechanically, so I bought all the seals (not cheap...) and dug in. When all was said and done, I fired it up and... it still was spraying from the same spot, just worse. So dropping it down on my priority list I put it away.
I think the smart thing to do now is to just buy a new pump assembly, but there are a million out there and none say "this one will fit your machine." I'll keep digging, but in the mean time, please take a look and see if you can see where I might have went wrong. I don't have the reassembly pics, but if you see a common spot that someone might screw up...
If you have a lead on a new pump also, please let me know.

Thanks.

I just replaced that exact same pump. Mine worked great for 15 years and let go in essentially the same spot. I looked all over for parts and tried to fix it. No go.

Take that aluminum main pump part apart...there is oil in there. Once apart you will see 4 allen head screws attaching it to the engine. Take those out.

You will need a 3/16 shaft key and new pump. Measure the bolt pattern...bought one from Amazon for 180. Works great now. You also need to measure the engine shaft diameter...probably 3/4"...

Those pumps are junk but those OHVI generac engines are amazing. Worth finding a replacement triplex pump for.

When you replaced the pump, did you replace it with one that looked similar? All I'm seeing are pumps that have the mounting bolts on the exterior of the pump where originally they're like you described. I'm going to take it apart again this weekend and take some measurements.

External bolts...couldn't find any that resembled the original internal design.

Got the Triplex high pressure 3.1 gpm...that is designed for the honda 6.5 hp engine which is what I have. If you want I can take a picture of it installed...works great. The shaft dia. and gpm, pressure rating all need to be considered for your situation. Bolt pattern too.

That explains why I haven't been able to find one that looks similar. Thanks! I appreciate the pic offer, but I should be alright now that I know for sure that the external bolt pumps fit the ones like mine. All the adds kept saying was universal etc. Universal doesn't always mean universal for every type. I'll post up how it goes. Thanks again for the help.

Nice looking pump. I bought one of Amazon that said it would fit. I doesn't look as beefy as yours though. I might return it. Prime is good like that. Returning isn't a pain. I'll pull it apart this weekend and take some measurements. Thanks for the pics. It gives me a better idea of what's out there.
I used your description and found this one. I might grab this one instead if it fits.

This is the one I picked up for $100.

This pump looks to be a Mi-T-M pump made in China. I have sold and installed a dozen or more of them in the last few years and have had good luck with them. Won't fit a tapered shaft though.

Can't help with the tapered shaft, I don't mess with the home owner quality machines. If you got 15 years out of it, that is an excellent run and sadly, you won't find an inexpensive pump that will compare.-

Thanks. Unfortunately that's what I'm coming up with too. I'll try a little bit longer, but if I can't find something, I'll just sell the motor or give it to someone I know that might be able to use it. It runs too good to just scrap. Maybe I'll build a go-kart around it for my youngest.

Well, this stinks... I pulled the pump off last night only to discover it's a tapered shaft. Of course, all the pumps I've been seeing are straight shaft. More research now...

That is screwed...never seen a shaft with threads and not a keyed shaft...

When I was researching I remember seeing several pumps that had set screws or allen screws to attach to the shafts for odd sizes...

Check Amazon again...if you look at that photo I posted earlier...that even has a bell opening to allow tightening a set screw on their other model...mine had the keyed shaft...

If you buy a new rig...I cannot say enough about the Honda engine...bullet proof is a good term for them and easy to find parts...

Thanks. This one is done for me... I threw it back together and I'll list it for the engine I guess.

I agree on the Honda being bullet proof if it is a GX series. The GC series is home owner quality and while it is better then the other home owner motors it isn't even close to a GX
