I have a 2008 25 kw Generac generator with a leaky radiator
Generac wants more than $800 for a new one
I know that if I find the OEM, it will be a lot cheaper
The engine is a 1.6 liter Chery, a copy of a Ford CVH, but my radiator looks very different from a Ford ****** from that era
Any ideas on how to find the OEM of my radiator?
Attached is a pic of my radiator's part number- OE9837B replaced by GENA0001231264

OEM likely won't sell to you if you found them. Typical language in supplier contracts with large manufacturers.

The last time I had to replace a radiator, it was a 1973 Toyota with Steel fins, I went to the shop in Tijuana that had the largest ad in the telephone directory. The built me a replacement using the original brass tanks and an all copper core.

radiator shop is where I would start. I've had radiators repaired that lasted many years. They also can get generic top and bottom tanks, sides, cores etc.. Sort of like going to a cobbler. Would you replace fine shoes if all you needed was a pair of heels or shoe laces? Radiator shops exist because radiators do go bad sometimes.

The engine in my Generac is a Mitsubishi 2.4 liter. I doubt the radiator is related to the engine in any way. A good radiator shop can fix almost any of them. You could also take the dimensions and adapt an aftermarket generic.

I went to my local shop and he said the following

1. Recore is more than the price of a new one (unfortunately TJ is too far)
2. Old Tools is right. Radiator is unrelated to engine and it's proprietary with a Mustang/El Camino to tank but custom sides and bottom

New radiator for me it is then :(

No Pik-a-Part in your area?

An all aluminium rad is the cheap alternative to costly brass /copper ..........typically under $150 .....find one that is as close as possible to yours and maybe modify the hoses

I agree with this.....if if is anything like my 30kw Cummins standby then there is plenty of wiggle room for a universal type radiator with a little modification.

We buy universal all aluminum rads for derby cars for 125 bucks all day long. **** I'm pretty sure the one off Ron Davis radiator my buddy had made for his BT4 swapped Studebaker wasn't a whole lot more than what Generac wants for yours.

Lots have rad shops have 4 inch thick books with different sizes and neck configurations to choose from. At the minimum I would jump on Summit or Jegs and do a little digging.

My JD Garden tractor radiator sprung a leak... Solder on the brass lower tank...
Took it to a local heavy duty commercial truck repair shop that had their own radiator repair section...
Three days later they called to say it was ready...
They did a clean, resoldered the core, pressure tested and painted the top and bottom tanks...
Still leak free after 9 years...

Yeah- local radiator guy said he could record but way more $ than the new one

Mulling over the idea of modifying aluminum Chinese radiator but concerned about fitting low coolant sensor. Generator won't run without it

Just do like what everyone recommends… find one that physically fits & adapt the hoses. I’m sure you can find a junk yard replacement.

Id think any decent welding shop should be able to weld a bung onto one of the radiator tanks. Assuming the sensor is threaded anyway....

This didn't make much sense. I don't think any reasonable person would want it recored. You just want it to stop leaking. Copper/brass radiators are serviceable.

If he does that kind of work, obviously he's not charging other customers $1000 to fix a leaky radiator. They won't pay it.

UPDATE
2nd radiator shop was able to repair 6 leaks and is charging me $250

Thanks to everyone here who persisted in recommending a repair, saving me $$$

Lesson learned by me to always get another opinion when the first one seems off/too expensive

BTW- the cause of the leaks was a mouse nest around the fan that caused several of the plastic blades to shatter and puncture the radiator core tubes

Man, I would immediately grab the steel wool, or WHATEVER it takes, to seal up the HOT DAMN mice entrances!!!!

I'm lucky, my [LP GAS] Generac Standby is AIR-COOLED, NO HOT DAMN RADIATOR!!

Since you have it out, what is the core size? What is the inlet and outlet size? Overall height/width.
Where aprox is this coolant level sensor you mention?
Does it look like this one with two top outlets?

Get dimensions, look up replacement from Summit (or RockAuto)
