Why the hell would someone build a caliper that displays in fractions.

General tools are fine. For a caliper, Elroy would go another route. General are not the best but you could do a lot worse

are these calipers decent:
http://www.generaltools.com/Products/Fraction-plus--Digital-Fractional-Caliper-(6)__147.aspx
they show fractions and decimal measuments, i dont need anthing super accurate, is this worth the price?
Check out some of the calipers at www.use-enco.com. I picked up Mitutoyo digitals for ~$85 and verniers for $65.

Woodworkers, possibly others.

Plumber 2: *measuring* umm, 0.62328 inches.
Plumber 1: huh?
Plumber2: *calculating* umm, 5/8".

For about 10 more dollars, a mitutoyo can be had on ebay brand new. I got one and love it.

you can find good deals on fowler too.

I would spend a little extra and get something IPxx 54,65... water/dust resistant/proof. It's a dirty environment out there and you want a precision instrument to last.

Make sure the caliper has the tail for measuring depth, some don't. I bought a couple of the HF variety, one for 99 cents out of plastic I use a lot, and the fancy digital one for like $10 that I rarely use. I'm thinking about picking up another $10 one that has the long offset arms to measure brake rotors.

It all depends on what your measuring and how accurate you have to be. For the most part General is ok. Most of mine are Central and do what I want.

Woodworking people use then!

Harbor Freight calipers are great for general stuff. If it has to be exact , use a mike.

I've had a HF 6" metal digital caliper for a few years. Every now and then I check it against my trusty mechanical Starrett and it's always dead on. Got it on sale for $8.
