I've got one of these but no 27 V DC source so wondering if this could be used with 24V DC input? Model# is 5BC31NJ65 might be from a 1960's golf cart.
Tag on the motor says 3amp 1-1/2 HP. 4000 RPM
If I vary the input voltage would the RPM slow down or would I just fry the motor?

Something in your description is wrong.
There's no possible way a motor that only draws 3A at 27V is a 1-1/2 HP motor.
If it really is a 1 1/2 HP motor, it would need on the order of 15 times that much power.

When I google the part number you gave, it shows up in a 1953 Air Force freight manual with the description 'motor, tail mount', so I'm guessing that it originally came from some sort of military aircraft application.
