Picked this up today. It shows a tad over 120 lbs. I didn’t need another vise but, this darn thing looked like new. The jaws are great and the Hugh screw looks like it has never been turned. The handle is larger than my Reed 106. I really like this thing and I don’t say that often about open screw models.

Why is it called a Fire Ext. vise?

That pipe fitters vise was mfg. by the "General Fire Extinguisher Co." of Providence R.I.

Frederick Grinnell organized the co. in 1892 and is most famous for his very successful invention of an automatic fire sprinkler. The company also sold pipe fittings and pipe, which would be used with the vise for installations.

The "GFE Co." vise came in -2- flavors, the "standard shank" screw spindle and the absolute ridiculous "long shank" version.

So, when a "long shank" GFE Co. vise became available to me locally, I jumped all over it.

This vise truly belongs in a freak show, but for some reason, I just had to have it in my vise collection. I store it separately from my other vises so they don't get "spindle envy".
