rescreening garage and house windows question. I hate doing it. Period. But I can and know how. May have to. Anyone find contractors who actually do the work re-screening at your place when it comes to 5 - 10 window screens or do they take them and sub the frames out to someone else on the bigger jobs? All the folks I spoke with around here want to walk away with the frames for a week or two then bring them back. I have to wonder if there is some place here in norcal where the contractors all take the big orders to, to be redone and then they mark them up and put them back in. Then they concentrate on the one window type jobs in the meantime. So far no one has shown interest in doing the work on site, even though their work trucks are set up for it. That is assuming they get their price too.

Just take them to Ace hardware and drop them off. Most screen guys take them back to their shop and do them there in relative comfort. I just do them as needed in my shop. I have 3 that need to be done this year.

Hit up Google and see if you have a mobile screen repair guy in your area. We've got one here in Boise that has a nice rig with a trailer that turns into a big work table for rescreening.

Replacing the screen in your frame is best done on a large table top.

Most Hardware Stores don’t do enough screen repair to justify the space requirement for such a table. An independent subcontractor may service several hardware stores.

The mobile guy and I discussed the job before he came. I told him the number of screens and appx size. He gave me a general quote on the phone. I told him I wanted to have them replaced on site, he scheduled a time early in the day to do the job. Then he was almost two hours late, had the equipment with him, truck, jigs, screen etc, but said he was too busy to do them in place and he could only take them. I made clear we needed screens this weekend to dry out the house after a carpet cleaning. He said he was just too busy. I have given him a chance to make good on it later but he doesn't seem interested. Typical easter egg hunt syndrome when a contractor goes after the low hanging fruit and assumes it will continue. I called our biggest ACE in the area and they have not done screens in years and they recommended a glass shop. I called the large ACE closer to me and they are all set up for it, and do them all the time. It is half the price of the mobile guy. I have given the mobile guy a chance to sharpen his pencil a bit but doubt if I will hear back from him. The other mobile screen shop nearby hasn't returned a call in 2 days. Most likely ACE will get my business. Fact is I could set up a mobile screen shop too, take them out, then to Ace and add $75 a screen to remove and install. Thank you for suggesting ACE. It really is an easy solution because I can take them at my convenience. They are 20 years old and worn but not torn yet.
