I have an older Yamaha generator. When I turn the fuel on it leaks fuel in side the carb, like the float isn't working. I took the bowl off and hold the float up and turn the fuel on and no fuel comes in. I put the bowl back on and it leaks. What am I doing wrong?

Shake it and listen for fluid in the float. I had one that would float, but still not close all the way. Ended up having a pinhole in it.

I helped a friend with an older Harbor Freight generator with a bad carb, found a new one on Ebay for less than $20 shipped. Sometimes its not worth the hassle.

It can't hurt to figure out what's wrong. If a guy has to try and find any special parts then the buy new route is the way to fly. Have had cracked rubber on needles. Get some good glasses and some light, something obviously went wrong.

Get another needle and seat and float if it is bad
Some needles have the rubber made on the tip of it
Some have a separate rubber seat
When carburetor is off and flipped upside down float should be pretty much level

Pull off the bowel, remove all needle valves and spray some carb cleaner into the fuel line connection while you activate the float and blow out every "orifice" that you can find..... Pay special attention to the float valve seat to check for a piece of dirt.
You can also soak the carb in Berryman "Chem Dip" Carb Cleaner for a day and use compressed air too..... This is what I do.

If you cant get parts right away, and have verified the float doesn't have fuel in it, some units you can cheat a bit and bend up the tab that contacts the float needle, so it applies a tad more force to seal up the needle.
