I would skip the gasoline, period.

I like diesel, however.......Diesel does has its issues......bacteria and algae growth in the fuel, cold weather operations better have anti-gel additives mixed in the fuel. Number 2 fuel can be expensive and sometimes difficult to find. Storage can be an issue for some people. Poor batteries and not having a diesel plugged in during the cold months can also lead to no start conditions. Oh, and prices for a good diesel will be about twice the price of a good LP/NG generator.

Still want a diesel....look here: http://www.hardydiesel.com/

LP/NG: fuel storage is indefinite (with LP) or an almost endless supply with NG. The issue with LP is the 500 gallon cigar sitting in your yard (I'm not a fan of buried tanks). Another negative is they aren't typically as fuel efficient as diesel. A plus is the fuel doesn't need to be treated and fuel gelling isn't going to happen. LP/NG fan cooled units are half the price of a diesel. LP dealers can be easier to find that will be willing to fill your tank at your location, where as finding someone to fill a # 2 fuel tank might not be as easy. New LP/NG engines will last longer today than those of 10-20 years ago....even the 3600 erpm machines.

For a good LP/NG unit, look here: http://www.gillettegenerators.com/index

All that being said, I own a 12kW LP unit. I couldn't justify the doubling costs for a generator that might run only a 20 hours a year. You must look at what the reason you need a generator for......I bought mine for stand-by power when I'm not home (sump pump, fridge, freezer), so I also have an auto transfer switch for turning on and off the generator. If you plan on needing the generator only when you're around, a Miller or Lincoln Ranger welder/generator might be a better choice. or a PTO driven generator.
