Generator & Ground rod question

In a remote barn I have installed a couple of lights and outlets. I am powering things with a portable generator. Do I need to have a earth ground rod in the system or is it ok to have the whole system not referenced to earth?

If its a stand alone generator not having any ground source to a panel or building steel that gos into the ground you should have a ground rod.
