generator problem

I have a coleman 5000 watt generator. I bought it used and when i fired it up over the summer and ran it, it did a lot of back firing and just didnt run right over all. Just wondering what some maintanence tips you guys have for making it run right. I did not have any troubles with it staying running.

Its also very very loud. It doesnt have much for a muffler, just what it came with. i was thinking of buying a moped muffler and fabricating it on. do you think this would help much?

mine is way to loud, too....I'm putting a different muffler on it. I like the idea of a different muffler, and I'm gonna try one on mine. As far as not running right, the one time mine acted like that, it had set for a long time...so, I drained the fuel and put in fresh gas...once it got to running, all was well.

Without seeing or hearing it I can only guess about the miss, but I would start with fresh plugs and fresh fuel. I bet the carb is also a little gummed up. it may clear up after a while with fresh fuel flowing through it or you may want to clean out the carb. again this is only a guess, but in my experience, engines that miss after sitting usually have gummed fuel in the carb.

As for the noise. This is common with this type of contractor grade generator. When I dry camped in a trailer trailer I went through this same thing, of thinking about mufflers and sound deadening boxes that deflect the noise straight up(look online for this one), then I bit he bullet and bought a Honda EU3000 and loved it. You can barely hear the thing running. If you really want quiet would suggest getting a Honda or Yamaha and you will have peace and quiet.

I was just looking for the "quiet box" design and found this thread for putting a muffler on a Coleman generator. Maybe you can do this.
