Generator Question - Step up Transformer

Here is an example of 4 wires out of the generator head. They are series connected to provide 120/240. A parallel connection could provide 120V at 2X current but none of the OCP, receptacles, or wiring is set up for 2X current.

Yes a step down would definitely work. That does add cost and a heavy transformer.

If there is 4 leads brought out of the generator winding it will be an easy conversion. If they only brought out 3 wires then it will probably be more trouble than it's worth.

It makes my poor boy neck hairs stand on end thinking what a 240-120v step down transformer the fellow in the article I read cost.
As I recall it was 5,000w. A 5KW step-down transformer? Ouch. Not cheap or light weight.

Not to go off topic or anything, but my favorite generator setup has always been a home-made affair.
A nice iron cylinder GX class Honda engine, with a commercial automotive alternator of the brush less design by Delco,
hooked to a nice 24v DC to 120v AC sin-wave inverter.
Running the engine slow and not spinning its nuts off at the crazy fast short lived Fathers day gennies usually run at.
